    New here.

    I recently traded my non running 87 bronco II for a 82 Yamaha maxim 400 also non running. All the numbers match previous owner used to ride all the time. He tried to get it running this year only to find that there was no spark. I have some mechanical knowledge about dirt bikes and 3 wheelers. I plan on trying to restore the bike to better than new by stripping it and painting/ powder coating the frame tank and fenders. they are currently light blue metallic

    I want to update the Brake, turn, and running lights to led. the head lamp I have to replace I can not live with a bike that looks like an insect, it currently has a praying mantis like fairing/windshield. going with traditional looking headlamp but with those that looks blue.

    What about a circuit breaker setup instead of fuses???

    What would be the best paint to use?
    I was thinking maybe emron Pitch Black with a clear-coat finish

    What about best tires for these bikes?

    Updated exhaust is needed someone painted it aluminum colored
    I would like the quietest ride possible.

    Any and all suggestions and comments would be greatly appreciated

    does anyone have sources for information pertaining to the interchangeable parts for these bikes?

    maybe even suggest a good source for how to .......

    Thanx

    Hey '82............welcome to the forum. I have been running stock tires on my bike since I bought it, but if you try the search feature on the forums, you will more than likely find what you need.

    If not, there will most certainly be a moderator (such as RickOmatic), or another member of this awesome community who will drop some knowledge on you that will more than meet your needs!!

    That being said, welcome again and be prepared to be baptized in the way of the XJ!!! 8)

    Welcome to you 82Maxim400! I'm not familiar with the 400 but from what I hear, folks who have them love 'em. Enjoy the site, there are occasional posts from the 400 crowd.

    Welcome, Maxim400!

    I have a Seca 400 -- same engine as yours but sport-bike styling and 6-speed tranny. (I put a used engine in my Seca from a Maxim, so my Seca's a 5-speed now.)

    Our bikes were only sold in 1982 and '83 (plus '84 in Canada). You'll often see them referred to as an XJ400, but that's not correct. The XJ400 was a 4-cylinder model that was never imported into the U.S. The true model designations are as follows:

    XS400J = 1982 Maxim
    XS400RJ = 1982 Seca
    XS400K = 1983 Maxim
    XS400RK = 1983 Seca

    This can be confusing because the older-style SOHC Yamaha 400 was also called the XS400, but without the letters tagged on the end, and was called the "Heritage" or "Special".

    The only options that I'm aware of for the exhaust is a used original or one from Mac Performance

    (See page 22.)

    If you want to try to find a used original system, you can post a request on RiderParts.com, and subscribing salvage yards who have the part will e-mail you with price and description.

    Not sure if the Maxim uses the same size tires as the Seca (90/90x18 front and 110/90x18 rear), but I went with Bridgestone BT45s for mine.

    I ordered them from Chaparral Motorsports -- decent prices and free shipping on orders over $100.

    Welcome, again -- glad to have another 400 owner on here!

    Herb

    Hello fellow xs400 owner!! I have an xs400k that is completely stock except for the fusebox which I happily ripped out and replaced with nice new inline blade fuses.

    Once you get it running you'll love it. It doesn't have the highest top speed obviously, but it will get you there pretty quick. It also handles really well because it is so light and nimble.

    I was thinking of putting drag bars on mine. I also saw a 2-1 exhaust for our bike on oldbikebarn.com i believe...

    anyway good luck on the restoration!!
