Since I just signed up I figured it was only polite to introduce myself before I dive into the search function.
I just got given an '84 XJ750 which needs surprisingly little work; the front brakes are seized and the HT leads are cracked and leaking enough electricity that grabbing one while it's running is not a good idea. Everything else seems fine... heck, even the carbs were clean.

This is my first Yamaha after a couple of decades of looking after old Hondas (and a brief stint dealing with an old and abused Suzuki GS850) so while I have a decent idea of what I'm getting into I figured it was a good idea to sign up and learn about all the little quirks of Yamaha engineering and how to deal with them.

Well, if brakes are seized, and coil leads are cracked, I bet the carbs aren't as clean as you think, either-----

Might as well figure on replacing the rear shoes also because they delaminate and cause the rear wheel to lock.

The coils need to be replaced or repaired if your coil wires are shot. I elected to install Dyna Coils on my 750. They seem to work really nice. However if you want to replace the coil wires you can do so by cutting the coils open and installing new wires and epoxy the openings back up. Test the coil resistance before you do so to see if they are in spec or you will be wasting your time.
