That mechanic is (honestly) full of shit. You will not get better fuel economy by just removing any part of the exhaust system. The machine was built when fuel economy was on the minds of every manufacturer. If Yamaha could have shown even a 1 MPG increase by leaving a part off (cost savings to them; advertising advantage to them), then they would have done it.

The YICS (Yamaha Induction Control System) on the '82 650 is a fuel efficiency system.

Does he perhaps, just happen to sell and install custom exhausts?

It is there for a reason. On XS650 twins, it made it more difficult to balance the carbs properly when you route two straight exxhaust from front to rear without any cross pipe.

That's a bunch of malarkey. Don't do it. The h-pipe balances the exhaust .... It's basically the collector box, if you will, for your bike. If he's telling you that:

1.. Is he trying to sell a nice overpriced exhaust to you too?

    2. He doesn't know much about your bike

    3. Don't go back to him. WE are your mechanic, and WE are FREE
