Hi guys, I am having trouble tracking down insurance for my bike, being told it is old

Where could I get some? I am in Mississauga, here in Canada.

    Thanks, Anthony.

PS, it's not for me, but for my dad.

Just got mine through Royal and Sun Alliance - less than $325 - pretty cheap for a new rider and a 25-year old bike.

    Thanks, I'll check them out...

When you say new rider, do you mean age, or just that you have just gotten into it? And I would assume that that is annually.

    GEICO?

    http://www.geico.com/

You can get it online in as long as it takes to fill-out the forms. I just ran a test to get a rate. Took about 12-Minutes.

Yup, yearly. And I am a New Rider - you know one of those guys who rode all the neighbourhood bikes as a kid but never went formal. So, at mid-life crisis time, hit the Course. My rate was through a broker. Did a few online quotes - $525 Primmum, $479 ING. Good luck in your area as there seems to be a lot of variation, speaking with pals in a few provinces.

Mine is 180 a month from may to sept. and 20 a month oct to april, it sucks big time. Every year they increase it, trying to get us two wheelers off the road. A brand new race bike here can cost around 300-400 a month!!!!

They only insure bikes. I have been very happy with them.
If you let them know that you are a referral from a current client, they should be more than happy to help you.
    $420.00 a year (full 12 month coverage) 1 million PL/PD.
If you need more info, let me know and I will see if I can help out.

I'm with Pilot Insurance - you usually have to go through a broker to get with them, and they might require a multiple policy - not sure.

    1/2 mil PLPD, ~$36 a month

WTF? I tried for Geico when I called them about insurance on my car since they have a multi policy discount, and they quoted me $900 a year on the bike! My current policy is $118 through Rider Insurance of NJ. I find that real funny because thats the same company I've had since I was 15 and insured my moped with them.. It cost $80 a year for the moped! Now its only $40 a year more to insure a bike 700cc's larger :p

    Hi,

I am new to this site but I do know a thing or two about insurance.
I am an agent in texas, but its all the same right?

They are saying no dice b/c of the vehicle's age, right?

Are you trying to get comp and coll? ("Full Coverage")

I pay $70 per year and my liability is 500k/500k/100k

    Hows that for cheap!!!

Are you trying to put full coverage on it or something? I'm paying around 125 a year, and just started riding. Only have a permit, but I didn't bother with full coverage.

I don't really care about how much coverage- its not a Harley, but you guys in the states have is so nice and easy! lol. We called 4 people for quotes, none got back today with anything - amazing!

And the thing is, the coverage is not even for me, but my dad who's had his M for 25yrs. (I don't need to be insured yet cause I only have a M1)

welasercut, you split that up by 12 months right? I have been told that some places want the entire amount up front :O

I would email them for a quote but they say they do bikes up to 25yrs old, 2007-1981=26yrs. What to do?

I just got a quote today for liability only 100/300 and other person's vehicle damage of 50k (required). They said it would be 160/year which is pretty darn cheap if you ask me.

Of note to this thread is that Canadian and American insurance systems are VASTLY different. We're talking HUGELY different here.

As the OP is here in Canada, all you US guys are killing us with the insanely low rates you pay for insurance. And of course, insurance companies don't do cross-border business....

Here in Ontario, it's not unheard of for an experienced rider with a new bike to be paying in excess of $2000 a year for coverage...

If I paid $2000 per year for a bike I would get over the thrill real quick.
I would start sewing as a cheaper hobby!

The rates in Texas< and the whole us> are comparativly cheaper than north of the board. :D

I still cant imagine why they will only insure 25 or younger.
You still have a safety inspection each year in canada, right?

Did you ask them why you were not eligible, or your dad for that matter.

They write the beasts of machines, GSXR CBR NINJA, why not an old school classic. Maybe they are jealous :p

With canada's very thorough graduated driving program your insurance should honestly be cheaper. Here in the states you can get your license in a day and be riding your 1300cc hayabusa with no experience at the age of 17. We should be modeling your program.

We (in Canada) do not have a safety each year. Each province has it's own rules about safety inspections. Also many provinces have different insurance laws. Ontario tends to be expensive and VERY expensive for new young riders. But if the OP has 25yrs with an M the rate shouldn't be too bad as the bike is a relatively small displacement machine. As far as I know you can't get full coverage here in ON on an older bike without having the bike accessed. Mine are an 82xj400, 84xj400, 83xj1100. The 11 is more than twice the cost of the 400's.

They are telling him he is "un-insurable" because of the age of the machine.
Have you searched online to see if there are any other companies who would like to have your business??

Thats pretty bad  coustomer service.

Tell you what, move to Texas and I will write ur policy

You might want to check if there are any specialty insurance groups in Canada.

In Texas there are groups that can write "ineligible" vehicles and it might be the same north of the border.

You might want to ask the agent you talked to if they will refer you to another agent who CAN write your business.

This is def a hastle for you and your dad I bet.

Part of the problem in Canada is that we have an economy that is 10-12 times SMALLER than the US spread over a lot more land, so we pay, even though the US has a huge liability system that we do not have (yet).

State Farm got back to use and wanted somewhere around $848 for liability or $1024 for liability and fire/theft. Thats fine, works out to about $70 a month for liability, but they wanted the entire payment up front. Is this normal? Thats going to be really had for us to do.

I pay just over $600/yr on my GS, which is about $100 more than I was paying on my Xj Turbo. I still think that is way too high considering I was paying $125/yr for liability in Alberta on my 900 Seca. If you have an older bike that passes the 25 year mark while you own it, you will probably have no problem CONTINUING your insurance with that company. I have been told I will be dinged for $2500/yr once my GS hits 25 years old. Yeah, that's going to happen.... Anyway, there are companies that deal with insurance for older bikes, you might want to contact the Canadian Vintage Morotcycle Club, since just about all of their bikes are more than 25 years old. I don't know how they justify not insuring bikes older than 25 years old. I guess they classify them as "classics", which implies difficult and expensive to repair due to availability of parts, or they are excessively valuable to replace (yeah, a $2300 Suzuki vs a $30,000 Harley). I think they are just finding an excuse to soak people again. You will have difficulty finding a company that will write a policy for anything other than strict liability. This whole mess is a result of the NDP meddling with the insurance system back in the early 90's, changing it into a "no fault" system, which really means an "everybody's fault" system, so that good drivers bear as much of the load as bad drivers. Motorcyclists also have NO political clout, and frankly, we are seen as a nuisance by a lot of folks. A couple of dealerships in Toronto have closed recently, citing the high cost of insurance, and resulting low sales as factors in their demise. Geico has advertised on TV here lately for motorcycle insurance, but I have not called them, nor do I expect them to be much cheaper, if at all. Most of the companies here are children of the same parent company.

I just did a online quote with RBC bank and they want 667 for my bike, we will most likely go with that because I cant find anything cheaper, I just hope they do not want it all up front, but I'll have to wait until tomorrow before I find out.

    Geico will not insure Canadians...

EDIT: I just call RBC, and it will actually be around $475 a year in 3 payments - Ya!

This may or may not be useful to anyone else here.

I had been using NJ Riders ins here in NJ. Good company, and great prices.

However, my standard insurance company USAA has finally started to offer MC insurance in NJ. It is a bit more expensive than riders was. In fact it's actually quite a bit more expensive, but it's a really great company. I have all of my financial stuff with them so it makes sense to add my MC ins.

Anyone who is already using USAA for anything else will understand.

Ahh dam it, we tried to finalize the deal with RBC and they said they would not put me on insurance even as a secondary rider so I am back looking for another company.

If anyone has a company that they know will work in my situation please let me know, cause I have a M2 test on the 16th.
