I noticed yesterday that something looked wrong with both the rear shocks on my xj700x. It looks like a rubber part has deteriorated on the right side (and disintegrated altogether on the left side).

    Here's a picture (I hope).

Can anyone tell me what to do- is there a fix for it? Is it easy? Is it safe to ride like this? etc, etc?

Hey Tarezo, consider the age of the rear shocks. In case they are to old it might better to replace them anyway. I did it. Got Bitubos on my XJ900 and they work really bloody good! A completly different riding now!

It's just the rubber bumper/spacer at the top -- the glue finally deteriorated from age and let go.

Has NO effect on the shock's function.

If you really want to put it back up though, just put some silicone on the top of it (how you get it in there is up to you) and slide it up till it makes contact, then hold it there till the silicone sets. Done for another 20 years or until they start leaking.
