Hi everyone. I had to remove the exhaust headers because my collector needs attention ( welding).
I took a peek inside the exhaust ports out of curiosity and I noticed a lot of hard carbon buildup on the port rim.
Can this be removed safely? I'm thinking this is somewhat restricting the flow of gases.

Have you removed the exhaust gaskets from the ports?

And bofore the usual reply of, "There are no exhaust gaskets on this bike" Yes there are.
Once you pull the gaskets out you should only see an aven film of carbon. You can use a rag soaked in the solvent of your choice to wipe it out of you choose, or just leave it since it's not restricting flow (unless of course you see something that's more than a thin film).

No I haven't. I only removed the pipes. The carbon buildup would be on the gaskets?

What you might think is build up might be the gasket.

The valve stem seals are leaking and the head gasket has blown. The copper exhaust gaskets are in there. How's your bike running?

The bike runs very well, pulls very hard, good acceleration. I rode this afternoon and all was well.
Is the bottom of the hole deposit for real is that the gasket shape?

No. The gasket is in front of it. It's the goldish bronze ring. Let's see what other members say about the build up on the valves and guides.

The carbon buildup is pretty normal, though I do agree about the leaky guide seal, and the tell-tale powder-white at the head gasket also makes me strongly suspect a head gasket failure.

The squared-off lip you see along the bottom of the exhaust port is the just the shape of the port; it's not excessive buildup. There will be some carbon buildup along the back of the gasket as it's slightly narrower than the exhaust port.

Thanks everyone. I guess this winter I'll have more to do than wipe off some carbon deposits...
