    What's your running oil temp?

I just got an oil filler cap temp sensor and once I'm up and running was hoping to know what the average running temp should be.

    Cheers.

does it glue on or require drilling or come with the filler cap. does it have a sensor that goes into the oil like a dip stick?
    got a photo?

    It's a filler cap replacement.

Here is my thought about those type of oil temp gauges. They work great if you are interested in the average of the temperature of the engine case and the tiny bit of oil that it gets splashed with. Because of the clutch location, the temperature probe never comes in direct contact with the engine oil; not even when you shut the engine down. This does not mean that it might not be useful; you'd need to collect data from it and compare that to the oil temperature at the main oil gallery, or to the head temp and see if it would be, 1. A reliable indicator of actual oil temperature, and 2. provide a useful warning of an impending overheat condition.

They were my thoughts at the time of purchase but was just uncomfortable about drilling an oil temp sensor into the bike. I've since learnt that I may be able to get a bolt/sensor which goes to the filter cap cover which to ny understanding would give a much better reading.

Either way, what temps am I looking for?

I don't think we have enough people here who use that gauge to give you an answer. What I do know is that conventional oil begins to break down at temperatures above 240ºF (115 C), and can tolerate sump temperatures up to around 280ºF. Synthetics can handle up to 300ºF without premature breakdown.

I was reading about 300F from a sensor in the oil pan... summer and under decent load, like while dyno tuning. That's the main reason I run the Amsoil 20W50 instead of conventional... even though the starter clutch doesn't much care for it.

Just out of curiosity; is there an oil cooler installed on that bike?

No. US SECA 750's didn't come with oil coolers.

I realise that, but adding one isn't difficult and there were several aftermarket oil coolers available for the 750. I asked because it would be interesting to know what the difference in sump temperature is with vs. without an oil cooler. I guess I have a defensable reason for buying more stuff so I can have a look-see and compare.

Sorry, but I'm not using the oil temp sensor anymore. I switched to a block-mounted temp sensor since it provides a better indication of the temperature of the intake ports, which is what mostly ties to the need for warm-up enrichment.

I am curious why oil coolers were stock on UK bikes, but not included on US bikes, when the US mostly has a lot hotter environments than the UK.

I'll bet cost considerations (for a North American market in deep recession at the time) had something to do with it...........

I don't need an oil temp gauge on my bikes.... If the red light comes on, I'll know there's a problem.

Well, maybe the flames coming through the seat might be a giveaway, too----

probally why there are single discs on some of the us bikes as well compared to their euro counterparts

Are you still using the block mounted temp sensor? If so could you give me a little more information on which one you used?
