read this link from www.xj4ever.com you have plenty of choices

Except for the XJ700, XJ750-X, and XJ900 models, the bolt hole size and mounting dimensions (where the fender bolts to the tubes) is the same between all models. The differences in the width of the fenders, at the mounting hole locations, is negligible. However, the "height" of the fender itself, relative to where it bolts onto the fork tubes, varies between different models by up to an 1" or so. Thus different model fenders may leave more or less "air space" between the fender and the tire when swapped between bikes with the factory original wheels and forks on them.

All that being said, here is what we've found:

XJ550 Maxim and XJ650 Maxim use the exact same (chrome-plated) fender. XJ650 Midnight Maxim fenders are the same fender as these, but are painted black rather than being chrome plated.

XJ550 Maxim and XJ650 Maxim/Midnight Maxim and XJ750 Maxim/Midnight Maxim fenders will interchange, but are a bit "taller" (away from the fender mounting holes) than the XJ650 Seca style fender (about 1/2 - 3/4" taller).

The problem here is that the frame has already been cut (badly and I'll have to clean it up, cutting it even shorter) by the previous owner. Also I should have mentioned that this is the rear fender I'm working on. I've seen a few members here who have cut down the original rear fender but I'm not looking to go that short. I'll look for some other fenders. I still have the original fender here but it was moved and mounted directly to the seat when I got it. I want to change that. I plan on using rivnuts to attach whatever fender I do end up getting back to the frame.

do you still have the plastic part of the fender?
you might do better with the double fender for a trailer the straight portion may fit under the seat better
