So my bike has been sitting still for a couple of weeks as I'm waiting for alternator parts. I went to do some bits and pieces and noticed traces of a leak and fluid at the underneath of the motor. The fluid is red and from what I understand, would be transmission fluid.

Here are some pics of where it appears to be starting. the fluid appears to be wetting left and right sides of the motor. I'm not too familiar with motor section names but I can only imagine the gasket at the bottom of where the fins are is where it's leaking. Would this be correct? Is this where the motor and transmission come together? Big job? Motor has to come out?

God damn it I just want to ride the bike!

Well, there shouldn't be any tranny/ATF fluid in the engine anywhere, are you sure it is not fuel that has leaked from the carbs and appears to have a reddish tint? What does it smell like (oil or fuel)?

There is a fuel smell but I thought that may have been due to my mid tank repairs. I thought it was an oil like texture but when I get back home I'll have a closer look.

It's blood. Your bike should not be bleeding.. Get a bandaid. If it keeps up, apply pressure and use a tourniquet.

Seriously, it shouldn't be red.... I wonder if someone put either kerosene in to loosen things up ( it's red) , or marvel mystery oil is also red .... Or at least it used to be red when I was a kid---

I'm going to guess its oil with fuel. It smells kinda like petrol but has a thicker viscosity. It is genuinely red, check out the pics. I tried to light my finger with a lighter but it didn't go up so I'm guessing it's a mix.

It got new motor oil about 6 weeks or so ago at a workshop. No additives were added to my understanding. I'll call tomorrow and see what they say. I have a feeling it's going to be fuel related somehow but will see. Cheers for now guys.

It's def fuel. Found the same colur at the tank. Given I have a slightly leaky temp fuel tap on a temp tank. I'll get back to sorting out the final fuel tank and will asdess from there with a new tap and get up. In saying that, I'll comment on another thread re fuel overflow hoses. The xj750 obviously has them yeah? This may be part of my issue.

Which one? 1976, or 2013? Incidentally, IMDB gives the 1976 version a pretty respectable 7.4 stars.

Both. The original movie adaptation is decent, but does not really capture the story.

Glad you found the source. Did you ever figure out what it was? Kinda looks like Loctite too.

Red loctite----Not exactly what you'd want to find leaking out of an engine... Lol. Of course, I guess it would be better for it to be leaking out than still being in there..... Haha

LOL. Well he did say that the substance was on the bottom of his temporary tank with a leaky tap so didn't sound like it was from the engine. Maybe some poor PO job fixing tap up with loctite etc.

Unless my bike somehow manages to defy gravity, I found the same colour on the petcock itself. There are no fluids higher than the tank so it simply has to be it... yeah? As I'm sorting out a replacement tank, I'm using a temporary PW50 tank and the rubber seal at the petcock is cracked. Pretty annoying seeming its a new item but either way, here's a pic. The fuel it's self is more golden but maybe it fouls, mixes with something and well, looks like this:

Nope.... Either somebody put kerosene, some other red dye, or something that otherwise totally does not belong in the tank, into the tank.

+1 and a stuck float has caused it to overflow into a cylinder and out a blown gasket.

Guess I'd want to know then whether the 2-stroke tank was added before or after the red coloring was found---

I don't have any experience with the red 2-smoke oils..... All the 2-smoke oils I use for my sled are all a blue-green color, but even then, they thin out in the gas and don't color the fingers like that, unless its straight oil.

The temp tank I was using was new and had no odors or fluids. I've now taken it off and am fitting a new permanent tank. Will see how I go. A bit of a mystery though thats for sure. My next tank will have a lockinh cap if this is where the issue stemmed from but I doubt it... I hope.

Just bought a new fuel tap and noticed this red sealant used. I'm guessing this may have been smuthered on the inside of the tank.

That's red loctite; used to hold the brass fitting in place. It's not soluble in gasoline.
