    I do garage doors and openers for a living. From time to time, I hack remotes for my customers that have motorcycles. (biker friendly business you know)
    I thought some of you may get some use of this, so here it is.

    This will focus on the Genie and "Overhead door" brand openers, simply because they use 12vdc batteries and that makes it simple. Liftmaster, sears, and some others use 3vdc batteries, so it requires reducing voltage.

    First you're going to need a compatible remote for your opener. Best bet is to get the model off of the back of your remote, and purchase an identical one to save confusion.
    Set your new remote per instructions provided using the dip switches, or in the case of code-dodger (overhead) or Intellicode (Genie) press and release the "learn code" button on the back of the opener, and then press your new remote button three times. This should sync the remote, and activate the door. Your remote is now programmed!

    Now the fun... Crack that baby open!

    There you have it. No more batteries... no more digging for the remote in your saddle/tank bag... and it increases range by having 14 volts provided by your bike instead of that wimpy little camera battery. I chose to wire into the low beam simply because I ride with the high beams on, and I can open my door with a simple flick of the high beams and never take my hands off the grips. You can choose which ever terminal you like, or wire up a dedicated momentary contact pushbutton. Which ever way suits your needs best.

    Keep the shiny side up!

    I screwed up the chronographical order, but, a simple flick of the high beams will open your garage door. It's a great mod, and if this post shows interest, I will try to make everything a little more understandable.

    If my garage door actually opened, I'd be working on this already.

    Something I'll definately keep in mind for the future :D

    I posted this on another forum, and it turned out a little more literate.

    See if that makes any more sense. Also feel free to ask anything in particular that I didn't make clear.
    Worst case scenerio: I've got an extra around here that's already built. I took it off of my Seca after the wreck, and no longer need it. They're easy to build though, and you'll never go without one again.

    I think my bike came right from the Factory with a Garage Door Opening Remote.

    It seems to be hooked-up to my Horn Button.

    When I get home, I just press the Horn Button twice. If the Garage Door don't open; I push it again and HOLD it.

    Sometimes it takes up to 30 ~ 45-seconds for the Garage Door to open. But, it always seems to work!!!

    Well I think somehow my remote is fried. It won't open my door. I reset all the remotes and tried to recode them. And it is the only one that will not work. I am using it in the original way also. I'm stumped, maybe I have to go and buy a cheap old fashioned remote, maybe it would work?

    I was thinking about wiring mine to the horn button. I might make that mod.
    I'm just not too familiar with the chandler garage door openers.

    I keep my remote on my keychain for both bikes BUT if it rains while i'm out riding then the remote gets wet and doesn't want to function again until it's had time to dry out. My first thought was to just velcro the remote under the windshield to keep it out of the rain but if i do that i'll have to remember to grab it off the dash everytime i park the bike. I really like the idea of wiring the remote into an existing switch on the bike, such as the horn or high beam, so i appreciate your post with this (new to me) idea. :D

    Hoping for some help.

    I would really like to do this mod, but I have a 3v battery for my remote. Could someone help me figure this out. I'm not sure how I would be able to reduce the voltage to make this work.

    I know which spot needs to be soldered, it just won't work when I connect it to the bike battery.

    I am possibly going to do this to my brothers scooter as well. Not sure what size of battery it is, but if it's a 6v bike, help on that would be great too.

    Thanks a lot!

    I did the mod but the high voltage fried the remote,maybe a voltage reg would help.

    Simple enough to figure out what size resistor you need.
    12VDC = E
    Current demand/use = I
    Resistor = R
    What is the current demand of the device? That or the highest current rating on the battery.
    Then you simply plug in the numbers like so:
    E = I X R (Ohm's law)
    That is to say,
    E/I=R
    All there is to it. Make sure to calculate the wattage of the resistor once you know the current demands.
    P (or wattage) = I X E
    Your output wattage should guide your selection of resistor so you don't burn out a resistor while your at it.
