    Hi all,

I'm originally from Nottingham, but I move around a lot and am always travelling to my GF's in Kent.

Joined as I'll be picking up this XJ900F tomorrow.

I'm hoping to use it as a mile muncher at the weekends to get to my GF's from work. Should be faster than a car in rush hour anyway!

I also have an NC30, which is teetering on the edge of becoming a track bike. I think that may happen after I start using the XJ!

    Welcome here.

That xj900 has a very unusual paint scheme, Well it may be usual for UK . I like it.

How did you know I have hairy hands!

    Thanks for the welcome :)

Well so far so good with the bike. Picked it up earlier, has a full stainless exhaust system, stainless steel front braided brake lines and brand new brake pads.

All good bonuses. Will need a pair of bar ends, engine oil and shaft drive oil change, not bad for a measly £500

What exhaust system is that, by the way?

Looks pretty much stock to me... The mufflers may be aftermarket, but they are still original style. There may be a different collector-- I don't see the chrome guard. The color seems familiar.... I'll go look at one of my books--- seems I've seen that before

It's a full stainless steel Jama system, just like the original but won't rot.

It also has new stainless steel brake lines that the seller fitted, and brand new brake pads.

I plan to give it an engine oil and filter change, fork strip, clean and oil change, shaft drive oil change and generally remove rust and protect with a bit of paint. It also needs a set of bar ends and the left indicator is not working, so the switchgear needs checking.

Am I right in thinking that 2.8l of oil is what I need for a oil and filter change? And also the service book I found states that I should use 10W30, but would 10W40 semi-synthetic be okay? Plus how much gear oil does the shaft drive hold?

That's ace, thanks for the link!

EDIT: Hang on, that's for the diversion model. I'll do some digging, see if I can find a better one for the pre-diversion model.

Engine oil change 2.5 litres, with filter replacement 2.8 litres. 10W30 would be a bit thin for summer riding, and 20W50 a bit thick for spring and fall. I personnally go for 10W40 but rarely ride below 5C.

Final gear cpacity: 0.2 litre SAE 80 API "GL-4" hypoid gaer oil

Be sure that the semi-synth engine oil meets the JASO MA specification.

For the final drive you can substitute a GL-5 gear oil if you don't find a GL-4 locally.

    Excellent, thanks for the replies.

I have a big 20L drum of 10W40 semi as I get through a lot of changes keeping the NC30 sweet with all the track days I do. So that's good to know I can use it for both bikes.

I shall have a look for the gear oil, there's a website I get oil from here in the UK that specialises in the slippery stuff for very good prices.

Also, and sorry for the many questions, but are there any parts (crush washers etc) I need to buy for stripping the forks?

By stripping the forks, do you mean rebuilding them, or actually stripping the old clear coat and polishing them and recoat them?

Your forks are different than mine, they don't have the anti-dive device at the bottom. THey look more like XJ750RL forks. They have an air nozzle at the very top neither, do they?

Thanks Alan, I thought that too.

A bit of painting of the rusted brackets and a re-do of the bodged paint on the tank repair should make it look really nice. I am reluctant to spend much money on it though as it didn't cost me much in the first place.
