Hey guys, quick question about cleaning carbs by soaking them in cleaner.

What would you recommend for something I can put the carbs in say, overnight, to get most of the gunk out? I've put a couple of bottles of the in-tank carb/injector cleaner through the XJ and it seems to have made things a little smoother. A friend at work recommended buying a few bottles of the same stuff and soaking the carbs in that... says it won't damage the rubber inside.

Should I just bite the bullet and go locate some Seafoam? Is that OK for carb soaks? I'm really just trying to tide the bike over until after we've moved (soooo expensive) and I can take it in to a carb specialist that's local to me here on the left coast.

    Thanks!
    C

This is what I used to clean mine.

Since you're in Canada, I'm not sure which stores you can find it at but here's another page with a list of stores.

IMHO, the stuff really works. I just take everything off the carb body and soak metal pieces (not good to have rubber parts still on it unless you want those to soften up) in the cleaner for 30-45 minutes. If you leave it overnight, the aluminum carb body will darken and sprout white salt spots when dried.

    Good luck!

Coca Cola .. soak them in a tub of coke.
DO keep an eye on them when in the soak tho ...the stuff is powerful
And you will have to rinse thoroughly when done.

Ok, I used a solution of:

    Carb cleaner
    Coke
    Lemon Juice
    Water
    Laundry Soap
    Ajax
    Sodium Pentothal
    Sweat
    Cinnamon
    Sand
    Cocaine
    and Febreze.

Problem is, I can't get the carbs out of the soaking bin without burning my fingers! What should I do? I tried a mop handle, but it melted!

Too late, there's nothing left except for a gray slime mass that used to be a carb.

Maybe if you dry it out and mold it back to its original form as best as you can.
