I changed handlebars on my 1980 maxim. Rode into town and noticed the left side blinkers wouldn't work but the right side did. Started checking bulbs and found the left rear bulb was wet and corroded and stuck in the socket. Cleaned it up. Cleaned the handlebar switch. Now neither side works. Any suggestions?

after checking your bulbs you may want to check the wires inside the control those wires on the slide tend to fall off.

I had bulbs fail , the tested ok and would light of the test bed but not in the sockets. bulb contacts the lead dented and making poor contact with socket

It is the wires inside the control. One weld is broken the other is the small bit of brass is broken out of the plastic. I can't think of any way to repair it. I have an after market control but I'm not sure I can make it work. The old one had four wires the new one has three. When I say the old one has four wires, I'm including the wire connected to the lever plus the three on the slide. You think I could adapt the new switch to the old bike. If so, how?

It can be repaired. Many of us have. Post up a pic and we can help.
If it turns ut to not be repairable, Chacal has the correct replacement for the switchgear.

I think I'm to the point of replace, not repair. The flat, black, plastic part that the three wires are connected to is broken off. Thanks for the help.

Yeah, I've been needing to do that for a while but I'm still compiling the list. Including the new switch I need I think I'm a bottle of brake fluid and a piston away from ordering a brand new 1980 xj.

I must change the signal switch so I want to get a generic switch and a digital signal unit so I can also install led blinkers. The new signal unit doesn't require feedback from the blinker lights. The new unit has two blade connections, the oem unit has 3 or 4 I don't remember. Can anyone provide some guidance on my new wiring requirements?

Which model Maxim do you have?
The wiring requirements vary some depending on model.
The stock flasher unit is 3 prong, but it's a special 3-prong that you won't find anywhere exept as a used part. A 2-prong flasher will work, but you will lose the auto-canceling feature.

My bike is a 1980 xj 650. I don't mind losing the auto cancel feature. The only OEM parts of the signal circuit I intend to keep is some of the wires.
