wondering if anyone can shine some light on tank fitment. currently, I have the xj750rl (900 frame) cut and starting to mock everything in place. having issues mounting the coffin style tank I picked up and am looking at other xj tanks to make the build easier.

Will an xj1100 tank fit the forward mounts at least? or a 750 maxim tank maybe?

here are a few pics of what I have so far. need to find a tank that will work ASAP. spring is coming..

I'm sorry. on the plus side tho.. I have all the extra parts still. if anyone needs anything, I can offer them dirt cheap. I intend on riding the bike, wanna make something that will suit me better. making the cut was a hard decision

any suggestions to a tank that might fit moderately well? I measured approximately 22 inches between the stock mounts, from forward edge of front grommets to center of bolt hole near the seat. can definitely be shorter but would like the front mount to slip in and the flat portion to sit on or near the frame.

I think that since the frame is what it is, anything other than a 750RL or 900 tank will need some modification. A 750 Maxim tank would require the least amount of work. If you know a decent fabricator you can have the tunnel cut from the RL tank (why not, may as well go all-in now) and mate it to whatever tank you like.

Since its a 750rl frame that was cut, you've already killed it so you can do whatever you want and put whatever you want on it.... Cutting and modding however you need to. It really doesn't matter what will fit now......what only matters is what you want on it. THAT will determine how anything will fit.

I still have all the pieces, could technically be welded back together with internal support.

I understand that the bike is rare, but in reality.. every manufacturer and year ranges have a "rare" bike. this bike was in poor condition and was missing a couple key components to make it whole. would never see a showroom. regardless, I need something to ride and what's done is done.

I read the other thread on tanks, you two seem to be the best people to answer the question here. I just don't want to spend 150 - 250 $ ordering a tank off eBay etc and it not work. technically, Im sure I can figure out a way to mount the tank i already have but would like to simplify things and get better clearance on peacock etc. keeping the tank XJ or yamaha at least is nice too, seems to be only harley parts around here and am trying to avoid making a yama-davidson

at this point, xj750 maxim or maxim xj1100 seem to be my options

    thoughts?

The Xj1100 frame is quite a bit different from any of the smaller displacement XJ frames, therefore so is the tank.
Any tank that you use is going to need work in order to fit. There is no bolt-on option unless you stick with the XJ750RL tank.
You have gone down a rabbit hole. Where it leads is going to depend on you.

I would rather use the same front mount for the tank if possible

I think the message is that your options are the same no matter what tank you decide to use unless you go back to the stock one. The 750 frame would probably be the closest to the 900, but again that's irrelevant at this point. Whatever tank you use will require custom work. Since you are personalizing it, keep moving forward, do it right so that it looks right. Don't try to bodge something together in an effort to keep it simple. If it is done right, the quality will go unnoticed except by those who can appreciate it, but cheap will always be seen by anyone who looks at it.

I decided to go forward with the coffin style tank yesterday. there's a few aspects of the tank that I'm not fond of but worst case, I'll redo it with something else. need to make a visit to the hardware store and see what I can come up with for rear mount etc.

thank you for the words of encouragement big shank

That weld. It looks to have very poor penetration into the frame backbone.

you get what you pay for.. lol had a friend hit it real quick while I held it in place. better than what I would have done. the front section has better penetration "giggidy", more than enough to hold the tank. I plan to put a bushing between the tank and frame as well.

so far, this is what I have for the back bracket. rougly mocked up on a magnet.
