1965 Honda S65 Sport

    Just picked this up super cheap on the local craigslist. Turns over and shifts through the gears, no rust on the chrome, original paint on the metal and original uncracked/torn leather on the saddle. Should be an easy tiddler to run around on.

    A friend's dad has an s90 in storage... red and white. I'm the only one who has even touched it in the last 20 years, and he still won't part with it! Tough little bikes, just plain nice! I'm happy for you.:Blackalien

    Dad bought me and my bro an S90 years ago for field riding - cost 15 pounds in the late 70s if I recall, but needed a float needle. Happy days...

    They're all riders. Nothing worse for a machine than to just let it sit (just don't go hopping curbs with it ;)).

    Still waiting on Vermont to send me a plate, I am planning on giving this to my daughter for xmas but she will only be able to putt around the campground until the municipal stuff is done.

    Hey BigShankHank,

    I have one of these, in Black, I like the white though, looks great. I have mine running, but second gear is a mess. Apparently this was a common problem with these bikes. Winter project to split the cases and replace the gear, should be fairly easy.

    Great looking bikes, it's nice to have a manual clutch on a little honda. Parts are easy enough to come by for any of these old hondas.

    I have it in my chicken house (I have a wood stove in there) ready to take apart this winter.

    Woohoo, you just answered a huge question for me, now answer another; are those OEM blinkers? I have what looked like mounting points on the forks but not on the rear fender, and no L-R switch on the handlebar pod so I wasn't certain they were an option on this bike. Actually if you could send me a close up on the rear ones that would be great. I don't think I have wiring either front or rear for blinkers but I know the wiring diagram I have shows them so it should be a simple matter to add them.

    Well I discovered that while all of the wiring in the bike works/tests as per the diagram, the ignition switch is screwing up the works. And what to my wondering eyes should appear, but definite signs of PO abuse on the switch housing itself. Sigh. Upon disassembly (made very easy by the amount of prying the PO performed previously) I found some missing and some pieces, rendering it out of commission. I find it kind of funny that this bike was designed to work if you disable the ignition switch, rather than ANY OTHER WAY TO DO IT. Anyway, the hunt is on to find a replacement, or else to find the courage to refurbish the one I have.
    So other than testing electrical stuff, which as I said all works now that I have taken the switch out of the circuit, I spent the weekend pulling off bare aluminum and chrome parts and sanding/polishing to a reasonable finish. As this is not getting a full bore restoration so much as survivor revival, I cannot go overboard without making the patina look like crap. So no high polished aluminum, no straightening out all the dents in the exhaust shields, but cleaner and nicer than before with a daily rider look to them. Its a fine line...

    Odd way to do it with the ignition switch, I agree. Not the most secure thing on earth.

    Then again, you could go for a leisurely stroll dragging one of these little bikes behind you...easy enough to steal any way you look at it.

    You'll have to post some finished pics when you are done.

    You may get lucky digging around the bike scrappers for an ignition switch.

    Been scouring the web to little avail, at least not within what I would call a reasonable price range. You are right though, I can practically toss this into the back of my wife's Jeep by myself, I think full coverage insurance will be my only real defense against theft. I did notice that the key does not turn the fork lock so I might take that out and see about getting a key cut for it as well, at least then a thief would only be able to ride it in a gentle circle...

    When I was at Mid Ohio last year there was a guy selling keys for 60's Hondas. All he needed was the number from either a key or from the lock. He had a lot of numbered keys in trays. I'm not sure what to make of that, other than I think a key can be made up if there is a number on the lock.

    Cleaned up and tightened everything up in the front and rear ends, including new brake shoes. Fronts were somewhat contaminated by the grease from the speedo gear so that's a little disappointing. Otherwise the driveline and suspension are good and tight. Waiting on an ignition switch from a honda forum member and this one should be ready for the road.

    It may be slow, but with the ignition switch in place allowing the lights to work, new brakes and tires and a valid plate, it still meets the state regulations for a legal motor vehicle in the State of Florida, so I took it for a spin. My daughter is going to love this thing.

    The lighting wasn't good for pictures. But you should get the idea.

    It's a single spring from switch to brake lever arm.

    Got, thanks man. Oddly, the engine mount bolt just above the brake lever is different than mine, I'd be willing to be there is a pinhole through that bolt that the lever return spring would connect through. Mine is just the cap end of a common hex bolt.

    That is odd. Could it be in backwards? Inserted from left to right instead of right to left ?

    Looking at my pictures, I see I have a lot of cleaning to do ! Haha.

    Late summer I guess. Racing season is about to start in a few weeks and I'm busily preparing my '74 CZ 400 for the vintage MX class.

    You daughter is going to love that bike.
