I'm looking for a good, cheap fork tube for a 1983 XJ750 Maxim. For shipping, I just need the top part. Not sure what years and size bikes fit.

    Thank you,
    Chris.

The part numbers are different, but if an XJ650 Maxim one will work for some reason then I have one you can have for the cost of shipping.

So far, I was able to find they are the same circumference. The fork seal number is the same for both forks. Could be shorter or a be different inside. I'll keep trying to figure it out. Thank you,
    Chris.

Can't beleave I haven't got any more leads or fork tubes. If you still have them, can you take the weight off, measure from the top of the tube, to the place it goes into the bottom fork. Then from top of the tube to all the way to the bottom. Can you do that?

    Thank you,
    Chris.

Heres what I've got. 36mm diameter, tapers to 33mm at the end. Length is approx 26-1/4". Inside diameter is 30mm at the top and 22mm at the tapered end.

    Tapered end pics:

Overall shape is good, no pitting and straight. I needed to replace one and it was cheaper to buy a set of used forks so I have one extra.

I found out it is not the same. Thank you for the offer. In my post, I described it as "the top part." It's actually the "inside" part.

Wouldn't you know it. The guy at the Yamaha shop said the 83' XJ750 is the only year, model with those forks. He could hardly use the machine that looks up parts, didn't understand what he was looking at, so I'm hoping he was wrong on that part.

    Thank you,
    Chris.

all of the XJ750 (except the XJ750-X and the XJ750RL) are 36mm,

you could possibly use another year front end

this link says 82 and 83 tube are the same click part number

Yes. The only thing Yamaha says fits is the 1982 or 1983 XJ750 Maxim. I could get another "front end" but I was hoping to only have to buy the one fork tube, since that's whats wrong.

    Thanks for the replies,

    Chris.

He is correct! 83 only. Air valve screws into top of the tube. Not the slide on side cap like the rest of the 750's.
The 650 fork tubes are approx 1" shorter than the 750's

You can use other fork tubes but you would need to replace both.

Thank you for the reply. I PERSONALLY would go by the Yamaha part number, at the shop, over most of these people.

One fork tube is slightly bent. It throws the whole bike off when turning. Anything other then a 1982 0r 83 750 Maxim is different inside. I could replace both forks with different ones, but since I only needed a tube, that's what I was looking for.

Ok, now for the fly in the ointment--

    Not showing pics yet....here's why

    Compared forks:

    '83'650 Maxim fork
750rj Seca fork - same length
'83 750 Maxim fork- SHORTER than the 650 Maxim fork

    Gotta look at these more.

    Len?!?!?!

Huh..........I show the 750 Seca to be almost 3/4" longer, plus it uses a slide bushing on the lower section. I show the 750 Maxim and 650 Maxim to have the same overall length.

All my reerences show the 650 fork tube at 580 mm and the 750 fork tube at 608 mm.
deffinately could se some verification here.

To clear up the confusionon of the difference betweem the 82 and 83 forks.
The 82 750 Maxim uses the single air inlet with cross over hose and slide on caps for the air assist. This puts the air hole on the side of the fork.
The 83 750 Maxim uses seperate air inlets for each fork. No extra air hole on the side.

This will be my project for the night. Will get it to you asap.

It had to be the Tarozzi TNK fork tubes I was researching but I am not finding the 700 virago.
And I may have assumed The 750 Maxim used that same length fork as the 750 Seca.
