I need your help guys. Yesterday I took the bike for a ride on the highway and at 2 occasions, as I was changing lane, it's like the engine died for a split-second then took again. That's how it felt anyway. The bike gave a jerk and scared the heck out of me! At first I thought that one of the fuses (probably main or ignition) was loose and somehow "jumped" out of it's socket and got back in - but would the bike have restarted on it's own? I know the turn signal was on for at least one occasion - not sure about the second one - and that's why I thought it may be fuse related. Any help would be greatly appreciated. For the techies, it a '83 550 Seca.
    thanks.

Check the ignition on off switch coming from the handlebars into the wiring harness. Its under the fuel tank on the right side. I have had those come loose and get corroded. Also it might be the ignition pickups on the left hand of the crank. Usually when those go bad you can tell by the bike not running when the pickups get too hot. Sounds like you have an ignition problem.

Mine did the same thing a couple years ago. It was the main fuse. I've replaced all the fuses with inline blades and the problem has dissappeared. My bike shut off on me just as I pulled out to pass a semi.

Thanks RangerG. did it restart on it's own right away or it would die completely? I know I need to change the fuse box, just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I had my headlight do the same thing, fuse box issues. Get a new set up in there and the problems will go away.

So long as the engine is spinning it will run if you have spark, so an intermittent electrical problem would restart unless the rpm dropped real low.

All the starter does is spin it. If it is spinning for some other reason (push starting, coasting) it will re-fire without the starter.

Update. last night leaving work, the bike did the same thing, at low speed, less than 2 minutes after leaving. I'd start it and it would die within seconds. I opened up the seat, the main fuse was burnt and noticed that one of the clamps wasn't as tight as the other one. So I'm hoping this rules out any starter problem, right? I'll be changing the panel tonight and take her for a spin. Wish me luck.

    OK ... Good Luck!

But, ... I'm "All In" on your Fuse Panel causing all the grief!
