So in the fall and winter before I took off for school I had my little xj running really well. I had checked the shims checked the brakes, rebuilt the carbs, and went through as much as I possibly could. Now for some reason it doesn't want to start at all. It will crank all day and even backfire on occasion. I have good compression and spark and when I pulled my plugs after trying to start it last time they were definitely wet. I have no idea where to go from here... Help!

charge the battery. starter will spin a long time with low battery got to keep voltage above 9.5 to 10 volts when starter is cranking.
    fresh gas?
a little starting fluid in the airbox opening remove the seat to gain access long slot across the back

Battery is brand new this year and was fully charged before I tried to start it. Tomorrow when I'm out doing errands ill pick up some starting fluid and see how that goes. As for gas, I put brand new fuel in last time I fuelled up my pickup truck hahaha.

could be a little bad gas in the bowls did you drain them with the new gas?
run some carb cleaner in the gas for the first few tanks
spark plug wires tight correct order?
do not touch the throttle when starting resist the urge it will flood you out.

You said your plugs are wet- how wet? It's possible you had some sticky floats and the motor is flooded with raw fuel.

My cylinder 1 float appeared to be stuck at first but when I pulled everything apart it was fine. Could the flat heights be affecting it?

Thanks! Ill try and start it later today with the carb cleaner in. I'll take a video as well. I was tinkering again yesterday and it felt like it was about to start but nothing.

    Making a carb stand helps.
I made one out of scrap wood, a couple old intake rubbers, and some screws as 'leveling feet'

nice setup I use a lawn mower gas tank got it for 5$ as a fuel supply went with the pvc setup only because I had the pipe and fittings.

I would suggest that once level you secure it down so you do not to knock over the set up and break a carb.
and of course the all important fire extinguisher kept handy
