So due to an unfortunate string of events, my 1981 XJ550 Maxim has an unrepairable gas tank.

Someone tried to steal the project bike from my garage and absolutely ruined the tank in the process.

On another note if you have a maxim tank or something else let me know!

I also have a tank off a XS400 that is MINT on the inside, with no dents on the outside just some minor surface rust if anyone needs that.

    Thanks in advance.

I am going to abandon my project and will be parting her (81 550 maxim) out. Gas tank seems ok but everything else has been screwed so who knows. It does have a dent and a little rut I can get you some pics in a day or two.

someone younger, smarter, with more gasoline in their blood can pick it up cheap and turn it into something useful. As much as I loath not finishing what I start, I dislike even more, perhaps, having crap hanging over my head waiting to suck time, money and life energy, all of which are in limited supply...
She's a very worthwhile project (I think) for someone passionate about bikes. I've sort of built my adult world around the motto, "life happens at ten mph or less" which hasn't included motorsports for 30 years or so.
But if one of you guys out there is looking for a place to spend a bunch of time and money, let me know.
And thanks for the advice, encouragement and insight...................your owners/riders group is pretty cool.

engine out head and jug removed, burned piston removed and replaced. Ordered top end gasket set from a guy who after 3 weeks told me it wasn't available. Then Mr hog told me I could have just ordered it from Len, but now I'm burned out and leaving for a job so I don't think I want to go forward. The master cyl and caliper needs rebuild. last night I fought with a pivot pin on carb float for 4 hours until I broke the mount in my failed attempt to clean carbs. So I don't know... early stages of complete rebuild or late stages of fix it and drive it.

thanks Dave and best to y'all
Times change and the xj was "then" for me. I'm 6' 4" and always felt like a giant on the low slung max. I will be looking for a <500 cc, taller, road/trail bike to take up an empty spot in my toy hauler if any of you good folks out there know of such an animal along my trapline from Duluth Mn to Seattle via 90 and 94....later John
