With deep sadness yesterday I said goodbye to my 1980 maxim 650. Last year I purchased a KLR so I could do off road riding with my friends who were all moving in thay direction.

I told myself I'd keep the Maxim forever but after a year of sitting in my garage i decided that it would serve me better to sell it.

I'm sure one day I will be back on a Maxim when my life situation is more friendly to having two bikes. But for now I will still bw lurking the forums here picking up knowledge from this amazing community.

It's a beautiful bike. Sad to see it go from you.

You know the difference between a 20 year old KLR and a new KLR?
The old one has probably had all the mods done that are needed to make it reliable.
Get thee to a KLR forum forthwith! (and buy a milk crate)

Does the KLR still need a Doohickey, or did they finally fix that with the redesign in '08?

Good luck to you and be careful with the KLR forums, you will never see a more wretched hive of scum and villany.

Doohickey was upgraded for 2008+ years. However it is still known as an issue for even gen 2 since the torsion spring is also a weak point.

I bought this 2012 off of a very good friend and he did all the mods including doohickey.

The worst part about the klr forums is that they are all anti Gen 2 haha the hardcore guys with all the knowledge are obsessed with the gen 1's
