Wondering what year / model my xj 750 is. It has a shorty vin or the 9 digit vin starting in 5G8 which I believe is the Japanese model but I am stumped whether it is a 80 or 81 model. I know that the G means 1980 but have not come across any 1980 parts? Also the serial number starts at 000100 which also points to it being a 80 model too. And just another one, is it a maxim or a seca? Any help greatly appreciated

5G8 makes it a Seca 750 from the Japanese home market, and it could be any year from 1981-83. The first three characters on the short VIN only tell you the model, not the year.
It uses the Seca 650 frame, looks like the U.S. Seca 75o, and should have an oil cooler.

Yeah righto. Thanks for the link. That is where I got my information from but I am still stumped as to what year it is. It has the round headlight and no oil cooler

Nah just the shorty. I'm looking for a set of carbs for the bike and want to make sure what I buy will fit.

You will have to decode the short VIN.
