So I bought some new mirrors for my 81 550 Seca yesterday at a swap meet. I was pretty excited as the mirrors that came on the bike only allowed me to looks at my shoulders. Clutch side went on great but I couldn't get the throttle side on. Looked a little closer and the mirror is left hand thread? What is the deal with that?

And I really want the mirror I got to work. I was thinking of just cutting the threads off and just welding on a M10x1.25 left hand thread bolt but I can't seem to find one anywhere. Not even on Mcmaster :(

I feel a little dumb about this but I didn't realize they were left handed threads on my bike so when I bought new mirrors I thought the female threads were messed up. Soooo...., I just got a 10mm tap and ran it thru and that worked great. Maybe I was lucky, but when my MC failed and I replaced it I had the same problem again so I just used the tap and it worked great again!

I'm sure that would work too. Like I said, maybe I was just lucky but what I did worked not once but twice! I didn't even know it was left hand thread until I read your post/thread on here. Lol, now I know!

Yellow... the reverse threads are probably for various reasons, but mainly if you lay the bike over on the throttle side, the mirror twists inward instead of snapping off. Had that issue myself once when working on my XJ and leaned it too far.

Also helps me when I garage it for the winter, and need to twist the mirrors in for the tight space.
