Alright, y'all, I have a question that I can't seem to find an answer to so I am turning to the collective for help. I lowered my bike ('82 XJ650 Seca, café-ish build) 2" in the front and 1" rear. What that left me with is a sidestand that almost has the bike standing straight up. I don't want to heat it up and bend it because I am worried that doing so would weaken the stand. I do not own a welder, nor do I know how to use one even if I did so I was looking at alternative routes to cutting and welding the thing. Also, truth be told, I want to keep as many original parts as I can in the event that I decide I want to do a dead stock rebuild someday. I was "informed" that the stand from a Maxim is a bit shorter and would bolt right in.

The question is: is there any truth to this Maxim thing or is this just another case of the "Iknoweverythingincludingthingsthatain'ttrue" mill grinding away again?

    Thanks guys!

how long is your side stand?

a xj550 maxim side stand is an inverted F
from top to heel is 9-7/8 inches to spur 6-/4 inch. you might have to cut the spur off.

    ask for measurements

This Yamaha 5G2-27311-00-R4 Stand, Side is used in the following models and assemblies:

Hey XJ550H, sorry it took me while. All my free time has been in the garage.

Thanks for that link! I don't know why, but I never thought bout doing something so simple as asking about measurements. I might need a kick in the head or something. This project has me hyper-excited, though!

I went out and measured, came up with 10" from the tip of the safety switch spur to the foot. the kick spur comes straight off of the foot, but that's something that I have been wondering about. With the stand up, the kick spur hits the footrest. The further I dig into her, the more things that I find that just don't seem right. Keep in mind that in the 5 or so years that I've owned her, I never got any farther into it than what I had to for routine maintenance (oil, valves, brakes, etc.). Now I am going "whole hog almost", ie. I don't want to pull the powertrain if I don't have to.

    Once again, Thank You.

You can yea it and bend it without causing any problems with the steel weakening. Heat it cherry red at the point where you want the bend, bend, quench, done. Do a Z or S bend to keep the foot flat when the stand is deployed.

Hey k-moe, I think that might be the route I go with. Seems to be the best plan and I can get a stand from fleece-bay to put aside in case that factory rebuild idea ever comes around.

    Thanks,
    Jon
