And you think swapping this completely different powerplant into your frame is the better solution. lol.

Trust me when I say that fixing your motor right will be way cheaper and way more likely to deliver you a running and rideable bike than the engine swap. These motors are simple, and the electrical system on them (except for the computer managed models of the 80s) is simple as well. Have you started a thread describing your original issues here, asking for help?

yes I have it didn't get me anywhere I had already done everything checked everything looked over everything that they were mentioning and still nothing. I think swapping the motor would be neat a one off and it would be mine. I know some thing's will be difficult to figure out but that is part of the fun of having a custom built bike.

Good luck. Don't cut the frame.

I like this thread. "I have a problem with my engine that nobody would help me with, so I'll ask questions about swapping a non XJ engine on a forum that is dedicated to fixing problems wih XJ bikes and engines."

By the way, you got a metric-sh*t-ton of help from many of us.

Again, good luck with your project.

Man I was just asking if anyone had ever done it. I did say that I was offered help from people on here. I am a person that makes many custom things and they all work. I'm still trying to figure out why you so mad about my thread? I didn't do anything to you and you just jump on here and try to start dogging on me?? lol your a funny guy

It could be that you implied we didn't help solve your problem. Last I read we were waiting for a reply from you about an electrical test.
Honestly if you can't get an ignition problem solved on an XJ, then a whole engine, fuel, and electical swap from an entirely different motorcycle is not likely going to be successful.

Like I said everything I tried didn't help. I got another junk bike from a friend for next to nothing and I thought it would be a neat project to do so I acted on it. I have plains for my stock xj motor so I'm not just going to junk it. I just got tired of coming to a dead end on everything I tried and putting money into not solving the issue.

Its not a matter of being negative (which he certainly is not). But he makes a great point, regarding not being able to solve an issue with a simple engine, and "fixing" the situation by inviting 100+ new issues. And then you put the icing on the cake by saying that you had plans for your stock motor...like what could they be that they trump fixing it and putting it back into the original frame?

You want to put a water cooled motor that makes twice the horsepower into a frame that was not designed for it. If the engine physically fits (it may), does the countershaft line up for chain alignment? Or will the motor have to be shimmed off-center in the frame to get the chain to line up, causing other issues (like the motor not being centered in the frame!)? You're going to put a really nice engine into a chassis with dismal brakes and disappointing handling characteristics...its such an unnecessarily big can of worms. What about the airbox and EFI throttle bodies- will they fit underneath the XJ backbone? Will the headers fit between and around the downtubes?

I did not see your other thread so I cannot comment on how much help you did or did not receive, but I can say that the members here are always generous with their knowledge, albeit occasionally repetitive. But that repetition comes from being asked the same questions over and over again by new users trying to get their old bikes running over and over again, so I can dig it. So rather than calling people who have been/are trying to help you negative, instead take a step back and really think about what they are trying to tell you. Because no matter how many custom things you may or may not have built successfully, there is really nothing special about a hacked up 80s streetbike. Go on CL, and you'll see dozens of them in various states of ruin.
