while these are NOT the carbs i sent Rick, they are pretty representative of what i DID send...

these ARE the carbs i sent Rick. ive added the (now infamous) socket head cap screws for everything that is 'assembly' related i.e. heat shield, float bowls, top caps etc...

i ended up with 2 sets of parts carbs or replacements should i decide to work them. i will probably do that over the winter, for something to do. i snagged the chromed outer top caps from this new set of donor carbs to put all the way across. yamaha (or mikuni) are pretty cheap to not use chromed caps all the way across...

need to pick up a couple more screws for the carb to head boots tomorrow and ill be ready to mount them up...

    yes...

he pulled them apart, soaked and boiled them, re-jetted them and put in new float needle valves and seats and bench synced them...

we had to find a set of donor carbs because mine didnt have the idle adjust screw or bracket...

he had to drill out one of the jets and chase the threads on one of the carbs...

they turned out very nice but im not ready to fire up the bike yet...

That's very impressive. I really value all of the freely given knowledge and expertise Rick puts forth here on these forums. He is very knowledgable and I've benefited from much of his experience that he shares here.

He gets the distinguished flying cross for exemplary service above and beyond.

If I had extra $$$ right now, I would send my two sets over for Rick to work his magic. Both to be sure everything was covered. I see that my original set is missing a few bits, so It's a good thing I got the second set off eBay.

    It is kinda disheartening though...

I see the originals and think how nice my carbs are, then I see the ones Rick has cleaned and think how filthy my carbs are..... ;)

Early days in my XJ career though, perhaps time will bring our work standards closer.

yes. there is a finish on it...

i sandblasted the brackets (throttle and 'choke' cables) and then dipped them in (i THINK) nitric acid. it puts a nice black oxide finish on them. i dont have anyway of re-galvanizing them and i think they look better in black...

no stainless fasteners because i dont have any of them available at the same price as the black oxide...FREE :D

    Kontiki...

no i havent been flying much at all. i lost currency when my wife got put on 100% bedrest when she was pregnant and i dont like the ONE CFI in the area (although he has a really nice 2002 172SP). my brother in law has 4 bonanzas (one airworthy the others in various stages of rebuild) that i get to fly WITH and i have another buddy with an '82 182 i get to right seat in some. still not the same as PIC thats for DARNED sure...

Do you happen to know the thread size of those fasteners you replaced? I like the looks and reliability of socket heads.

Can you confirm what you used? That looks real nice! I'd like to do some parts like that. (I assume that will just work on the natural steel parts?) How durable is that finish going to be?
