Hey, new to the forums, just bought a 1981 xj650 maxim H (non ycis) and I broke a few bolts replacing intake boots. I have access to a parts bike. The bike is a YCIS version and I was curious if I could swap the head from that one to mine.

I was thinking of swapping over parts from my current build and just going with the ycis version but I haven't any idea of the condition of the engine as its been outside for some time.(intake boots look near mint though) and I did get my current xj to start and run

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

If you're going to the trouble to pull the head, I would have a machine shop repair the correct head that was originally on the motor.

Get some modeling clay. Make a dam/cup around the broken bolt to hold....
A mixture of warm water and alum.
Wait a few days. the broken bolt will be gone, leaving behind undamaged threads.

I was thinking of that, but I'm trying to keep costs down as much as possible and I have no idea how much it would cost. Especially considering when I go to take the exhaust off every stud will probably snap too

Alum is a compound of potasium and aluminum sulfate. It is used in making pickles and can be found in the spice section of most grocery stores.

The exhaust studs rarely snap, mainly because you're removing nuts from the studs instead of removing screws that have corroded to the head.

I think he snapped some Intake boot allen bolts ? Correct ? I agree try what K-Moe said. is there any part of the bolt sticking out? Craftsman makes a real nice stud removal tool ( they look like sockets) they come in metric sizes , you might give this a try too.

Find a welder. Ideally, someone that can TIG. Anyone that knows what they're doing can get those out easily.

If all else fails, and you want to move on to a YICS system, I do have a set of jugs which are off an 82 YICS bike, and they only have about 5,000 kms on them. Still in very good condition. Get at me and I'll sell you them for cheap. however.. shipping will be pricey.
