    Hey everyone,
I have an 82 yamaha maxim 550. I bought it a couple years ago and have the bike all stripped down. I am just getting around to wanting to rebuild it and was wondering for the engine is there any kinds of mods to get more out of the engine like cams, head shaving or porting? Also I have also tossed the idea around of buying a 650 engine, will that fit on the 550 frame? Thanks.

    Hey my man

Good to hear you're starting out boldly rebuilding an xj.
I'm not sure about swapping, I think the 550 is the one which doesn't, but I can't be sure.
YOU will be sure, when you read the information overload hour!
It's almost a must-read if you're expecting to be useful to yourself when you're rebuilding.

    Happy wrenching!

If you want more power buy a bigger bike. If you want good running 550 do the work. They are fun to ride. :)

550 is chain drive. 650 is shaft. The 650 engine will not swap in to the 550 frame.

A well sorted XJ550 is a blast to ride, and plenty fast for the street. If you want a 500 class machine that is faster, then be prepared to buy something that is 20 years newer (and even then it will only be just a little faster. Heck, the 2013 CBR500R is 0.6 slower in the 1/4 mile!).

about all you can do is swap out cams and carbs from a seca 550
it will make it a little quicker but you will have the same top end speed.
not worth the money you will spend

Welcome shawn7917, and enjoy your build, and if this is your first bike you may be surprised with how quick it is.

lose weight! Made me faster, and the bike too. :) Also those OEM rear shocks are like boat anchors.

FZ600 or YX600 (Radian) engines will fit but you will need the carbs too and possibly the TCI to get most out of it.
Then you also have to do without a rev-counter or fit an electronic one.. Then, when you've finally done it all, you need to
decide if you can tell the difference..;)
