Got my bike for $900. Drove as is for the first year then decided to tear it down a make some mods. After I got it all back together rode for most of the summer and then the starter went out. Having trouble finding a new motor as the bike is old. Was wondering if anyone has swapped a different year/make/model motor out with any success? I can find other years and engine sizes for some what cheap just not sure I can swap them. Most of the sales people offer no help. Info would be appreciated! Thanks!

Found my answer in another post. Disregard.

I have a starter motor out of an 82 XJ650R Seca. No issues. Bagged up and ready to go.

What are you looking for in price? How many miles were on the bike before it was removed? I did a lot of work rebuilding my motor and am afraid a used one might get worn out quicker. After the engine work I could tell the starter was having trouble. Also would it be a straight swap?

    Which XJ do you have?
The starters are easily rebuilt (usually), but having a working spare is not a bad idea, or swap his in and rebuild yours this winter for a spare.

I have '81 650 maxim. I can't rebuild because the armature is worn out. Having it rebuilt would be around $300. I could buy a new armature from Yamaha parts nation for around $500 or just a new assembly for around $300. Looking for a less expensive fix. Or it will have to wait until I have the spare $300-$500.

Thanks for the links. I found those while surfing the forums looking for help on a swap out. The ones that seem to fit are $300 + shipping. I think it comes out to 350ish.

Thank you and I will keep this in mind for the future as I have been working with a forum member about picking one up from them. I will take a look at your stock to see what all you have. I'm sure this won't be my last purchase.

Do you have a website or is it just by request through conversation? Tried to follow your profile to a sit but didn't get far.

Link to xjforever is at the top of every page on this site. It'll bring you to Chacal's catalog. He has everything that's out there for these bikes.
