I have a new-to-me 1982 XJ650J Maxim that I am going through. Among the things I'm checking over is the valve clearances. I have searched the site here and found some very useful information, as well as some conflicting information, specifically regarding the clearance. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

The AIRHEAD VALVE ADJUSTMENT with Pics thread says this:
    650 all x. Turbo:
    Intake: 0.11 - 0.15mm ( = 0.004 - 0.006")
    Exhaust: 0.16 - 0.20mm (= 0.006 - 0.008")
    xjbikes dot com/forums/threads/airhead-valve-adjustment-with-pics.14827/

but the Haynes manual says this:
    XJ650(UK) and XJ650J
    Inlet 0.16 - 0.20 mm (0.006 - 0.008 in)

    Exhaust 0.16 - 0.20 mm (0.006 - 0.008 in)

    All other models
    Inlet 0.11 - 0.15 mm (0.004 - 0.006 in)
    Exhaust 0.16 - 0.20 mm (0.006 - 0.008 in)

    manualslib dot com/manual/837861/Yamaha-Xj750.html?page=31

I'm in favor of setting the valves a touch loose rather than a touch tight, but I am hoping that someone can tell me which I should be shooting for.
    Thank you!

    The Haynes manual is wrong.

So is the Yamaha manual, and the Clymer. It's a typo.
Use the info in the thread, which is the same info that Yamaha put on the inside of the left sidecover of every XJ.

Use the chart provided in the thread and you will have valve clearances that are in spec.

You must have read my mind - I was just seeking out the factory service manual to see what it said.

I will use the #'s in the AIRHEAD VALVE ADJUSTMENT thread then. Thanks! :)

Sure enough - I checked the left side cover, and it specifies the engine and the valve clearances. Right on. :)

My XJ650J/XJ650G Yamaha Service Manual is correct...at least for the valve clearances. The shim selection chart might have errors but I've never used it. Mine shows it was printed in 1982 and then a 4th printing in 1984. Maybe they corrected the errors.
