So I came to this forum about a month ago with my father's Maxim xj650 that has been garaged for the past couple of decades. I assumed it sat for 20-26 years because the sticker on the license plate said 90 but I confirmed with my dad that he last drove it around 2000; So only 16 years. After about a month so far I've cleaned the carburetor, derusted (almost) the gas tank, changed the oil, rear brakes, air filter, and battery.

Yesterday was the day I decided to crank it for the first time and to my surprise started right up! It honestly scared me when it fired up because I've never heard it run before, it was a smallish room, and I'm sure the throttle cable was adjusted a tad too tight. I'm so thrilled that it's actually running. It seems pretty smooth but I can't really say for sure because I only ran it for a few seconds. Now that I know it actually runs I'm confident enough to open the gates in my wallet to replace the tires and rebuild the brake system.

    Here's a video of it!

Right now all of the cosmetic parts are removed and set aside but everything is there. I plan on making a timelapse video of all the parts being put back on just for fun.

:( I was hoping I'd get lucky and not have to sync it. How can you tell? The hiccup around the end was because I was messing with the choke.

The sound when it's idling is not "sewing-machine" smooth...........

Death and taxes and synch..........no escape from any of them!

It's worth the effort to set the carbs right.
