1985 xj700n oil light??

    hi, may have an issue with the oil light,oil light will only light up when the starter motor button is pressed so i think the wires are crossed or is this the way it is, thanks

    the oil light is supposed to come on when you first start the bike (press starter button) it is to test the light to make sure it is working.
    the light also comes on when you are low on oil.
    would not want to find out the hard way your bulb is burnt out.
    the oil level sensor turns the light on with low oil . when you change the oil you will want to test this switch to make sure it is working. they get stuck and can be cleaned out. this is important to check because you would not want to find out the hard way your your sensor is not working

    look in the wiring diagram and you will see that it connects to the ground side (starter button) of the solenoid

    just a quick one, found the oil level sensor in the oil pan, is the oil pressure switch also in the pan??

    There is no oil pressure switch. The oil level sensor (it's a float switch) is all you have. The other switch that you may see is the neutral switch (it's in a well, so not likely that you're seeing it).
