TCI Replacement??

    Anyone try one of THESE??

    Sounds like another alternative to a replacement TCI unit from Yamaha.

    while ive never actually SEEN the price tag on the OEM yamaha part, ive been TOLD that $165 is about 1/3 the price...

    i dont see an 81 model listed :(

    81 uses the same TCI as 82.

    My ususal source for OEM pricing does not seem to carry TCIs.

    I was just looking over the schematic for the ignition system. I think I can build one using some inexpensive automotive parts. Hmmm... Probably wouldn't cost more than $50.

    I have tested (by testing it was to make sure it worked in case the Yamaha unit crapped out on me) one of the units from dyna ignition and had to make up some special parts for it, IE a magnet attached to the end of the crank. It did work however I never dynoed and compared it to the
    currentfor 1984 Yamaha ignition. But I did make up all of the special parts for it for my bike. Kind of fun when you can find parts for a different make or model and make them work.


    Ok if the weather ever cools off enough for me to replace the rear chain and sprocket and then get the bike ready to ride, in the words of Animal house..........OOHH BOY IS THIS GONNA BE FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    This bike was the one that won the last year of vintage Dinosaurs at WSMC when the class only had two rules, 1985 and earlier and DOT tires. So essentially it was unlimited displacement and this xj 550 kicked some serious TAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!
    I keep telling myself that I am going to put it back on the streets again. Guess 10 years since winning the class championship and now is long enough for it to sit. Dam its gonna be expensive for me to get all of the street gear again!!!!

    Polock: BINGO! Exactly what I had in mind!

    EDIT: Except it's wired wrong for the XJ ignition circuit. Looking at the GM modules, you'd want to hook both B's to +12v, C on module 1 to the negative terminal of ignition coil 1 (Gr wire) and C on module 2 to the negative terminal of ignition coil 2 (O wire). Then hook G and W of module 1 to B and O of pick-up 1 and G and W of module 2 to Gy and B of pick-up 2 (assuming ignition coil 1 is matched to pick-up 1). Both modules would need to be mounted on heat sinks and grounded, of course. The only concern would be the timing curve that's preprogrammed into the modules. It may not be quite right for a four cylinder engine. But then again, I think GM uses the same module for six cylinders, so it may not make a difference.

    So I take it no one's every used one then. Well, it is a pre-packaged drop-in option. No fabricating...just swap units (supposedly).
