I'm sure this has been covered elce where but I can't find it, I have a reduced wiring setup and need to figure out how to wire in the headlight relay so it's not allways on does anyone know how to do this

you could put a toggle switch to the power to the relay the wire that controls the relay, or hook toggle to hot wire to head light from fuse.
or eliminate the relay but you would need a properamp rated switch 20 amp would be best

I thought about switching it with no relay but then I have to remember to shut it off

You need to wire it like the factory setup to make it automatic. If the headlight is coming on with the key, then it sounds like you have the 12V source at what was once the input from the rectified AC Generator output. Doing it that way will energize the relay turning on the headlight as soon as the key is turned on.

Since you are using the minimal wiring, and likely removed the diode block, you would need to wire correctly and series a single diode with the white wire from the generator. If the Rec/Reg and headlight relay are in their original locations, it would be a very easy addition.

The wiring diagram is for the stock Yamaha headlight relay. You won't find one at Radio Shack.
If you no longer have the one that came with your bike, then start a conversation with Chacal.

If you're asking about the diode, then you'll want a 12v diode that is rated for the current draw of the relay (not the headlight current draw). You can err on the safe side and use a diode that can handle greater voltage and current than the circuit requires.

I am looking for a single diode for the headlight relay only, how do I figure the current draw of the relay

Across the field coil 12v supply 115ohm which comes out to .1 amp

Ok I may be a dummy here, is the diode the thin plastic piece or the large rectangle?

Diode block is the smaller black square-ish "dongle" in the headlight bucket

you would need a relay that would carry the load of the headlight 55 watts /12 volts=4.6 amps so at least a 10 amp contact relay. (r/y L/b connections)
the diode in the pic that is inside the relay is to latch it on when running 1n4004 diode would be good. this diode is why your headlight stays on when you use kill switch to turn off bike headlight stays on untill key is turned off.
the winding of the relay just wants to be rated for 12 to 16 volts (B W connections)

    RadioShack 1N4004 Micro 1-Amp Diode
    Catalog #: 2761103
    $1.49
    you will want 2 diodes

RadioShack 12VDC SPST Automotive Relay Switch

    Catalog #: 2750001
    $6.49
Use this SPST 12VDC/40A relay as a replacement in y

This pRticulr diode is a 4003 and can handle 100v 30a surprising for something so small

The only RadioShack in existence near me only had the 4003 diode, my relay is still good tested it for a while yesterday nothing blew up so I immagine it worked, where would I put the second diode? I have one coming from alternator

That was a physically small diode about 30 years ago. Open up your TV remote and see if you can identify (or even see) the diodes on the board.

I wonder that myself. The only other diode in the above diagram is internal to the factory headlight relay.

I've got the factory relay still everything works smooth I'll know if my massive rewire works after I get the motor back

    raidio shack has mail order
ask for rectifier diodes they stock several amp sizes 1n5XXX is the next size up
any 1n400x series should work as both needed control the coil in the relay
one diode comes from alternator and is used to rectify the ac voltage into dc voltage
the second diode is used on the relay to keep it latached so head light stays on when you shut bike down with sidestand or run/kill switch
second diode hooks to output side of relay (to head light) back to relay 12volt side.
in the picture 85 and 86 is where you connect to activate relay one is ground one is +12 volts( this relay may share the ground connection)

it is used to latch (keep relay on) relay on you could crimp it into quick disconnect for head light 12 volt and coil 12 volt quick disconnect. cover with heat shrink.
it is not needed if you do not need head light on when you put down side stand to shut down motor or turn bike off with run/kill switch.

the factory internal diode does what is stated above.
with factory relay 2ed diode is not needed

That's what I figured, but wondered why the OP needed it since he has the factory relay to use.

misunderstood his request for part number as request for relay part not diode.
my radio shack guy would have known what diode to hand me he is very good and 90 miles away.

I am a bit confused about all that you are being told with new relays and such. If you use the stock headlight relay that you told us you have, then you only need to add one diode, which is taking the place of what used to be in the diode block. This will make it work as originally designed.
