I've only used NGK in my xj550. Why would I try anything else?

Agree with Polock, you won't feel any difference.

Sometimes you do. There are a few manufacturers who claim equivalency, but don't deliver. I can't recall exactly which specific brands, but there are a few threads where changing to an NGK solved rough running problems (even after having swapped for new plugs of the same brand that caused the trouble).

As long as you buy plugs with the right specs, it won't matter

True, but (as I implied) not all manufacturers actually make their plugs to the stated spec (including NGK on occasion).

I can speak anecdotally that you should go with the ngk bp7es. I had something else, I forget the brand, but it was acting almost like the carbs needed to be cleaned. I switched what was on the bike when I got it (i forget what they were) and things smoothed right out.

I'm havingtrouble getting NGK BP7ES here. Supplier says no longer available in Canada. Had to go to Autolites for the equivalent. Will find out how well they work this week. Only non resistor plugs I can get.

That is dissapointing. Shipping and fees into Canada are horrible. If the Autolites dont' work out try Ebay. I found a few listings at just under $6 CAD each, including shipping, which isn't too bad. You might also see if you an get an equivalent plug from Bosch.

I've been using NGKs for decades after more than one instance of dud Champion plugs new out of the box, which causes some head-scratching. Never had that with NGK. Otoh, I picked up some NOS Denso Twin-Tip recently at a very good price, and if they perform as well as the NGKs that were in it, I'll be happy enough.
