"gas-proof" sealant?

    Background:

I found that my carb floats weren't working and had gas in my oil. My petcock is functioning correctly but I was fiddling around with installing an inline fuel filter and had it set to prime for a fair bit that afternoon. I left it overnight last night set to the on setting and the contents of the fuel line had drained into the crankcase when I checked this morning.

I pulled the carbs today and cleaned up the float valves and went about putting it back together. When tightening the float valve into carb #3 I noticed it felt very different than the others, spongy rather than coming to a stop. Sure enough when looking closer I discovered the tower that the valve screws into is cracked near the top. I tested after putting it all back together and it overfills within 5 minutes and leaks gas.

    Problem:

I need a new carb body to correct this problem. I only have a couple more weeks of insurance left for this season and that time would be spent waiting for payment to travel through the mail and the new body to arrive. I'd like to get out some more this year of course.

Is there any kind of sealant that will stand up to being immersed in gasoline?

I'm wondering if I can perhaps "weld" the valve seat into the carb body with some type of silicone or glue on the threads to stop this problem for a bit, as the crack is at the top of the tower where the valve is threaded in. I have to throw out the carb body anyway, so if the valve body is permanently attached it should not be an issue in the future. I'll install a new valve in the replacement carb body to be ready for next season.

Would red locktite or any other product be likely to stand up to the gas for a couple of weeks?

    TIA

edit to add: Just discovered my petcock does in fact leak if not left pointing exactly at "on", but just pointing down. That explains the volume of fuel that was ending up in the oil.

    Try this product...

It should hold up to gasoline just fine. (See their Technical Data Sheet (.pdf) for more information.)

To keep my petcock from leaking around the seal and screws, I used some stuff called "Seal-All". It says it's gas and oil resistant, and a big tube only costs about $1.87 at wally world.....and so far it has worked great. It's a adhesive/sealant, so I've used it for a variety of things. My petcock hasn't leaked since. It might be the quick-fix your looking for.

JB Weld, after you boil the carb body to clear out the gas in the metal.

Oh yeah, you can have the carb body fixed if you have a really good welder and a machinist to size the hole back to tolerance.
