Hi, I Have a few questions about the carbs on my 1981 XJ650H Maxim.

    1. I took them apart before I started reading the Forum, and I didn't track what part came out of which carb. How badly did I mess up?

    2. The points of the needles attatched to the diaphram assembly are blunted and rolled over. Do I need to replace them or can I just remove the excess metal? (The rolled over portion without changing the taper angle.)

    3. Do all models of XJ's have YICS? If not, how do I figure out whether mine does?

I'll leave the first two questions to those with more experience, but I can help with the YICS info. I believe they didn't start the YICS till 82, but if your bike did have it you'd see the letters "YICS" in very large print on the side covers of your engine.

Welcome to the game Gossomer, sorry you didn't find us before pulling the carbs apart. I'll attempt to answer your questions.

As far as swapping parts between carbs, fine except you must keep the float needle and seat matched together. Of course you might have to reset your float levels to match the installed pieces but that goes with the territory.

You need new needles if the tips are rolled over. Sorry.

If you have an H model, no YICS.

Thanks for the answers. Do you know where I can find new needles?

Bike Bandit.com still has them listed.

    Welcome to the site Gossomer.

I think you're referring to the Jet Needle, the long thin needle that is attached to the piston/diaphragm assembly.
I did a quick search for some pictures and came up with this thread…..
    http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=3649.html
If you wait for all the pictures to load, then scroll down until you see the 19th picture with the parts in the egg carton, in the foreground you will see the piston/diaphragm with the jet needles sticking up. Take a look at those and you will see that the tips are tapered and sorta do have a blunt end to them.

Robert, correct me if I’m wrong but I think you are referring to the needle/seat assembly (shown in picture #7 in above link) that lets fuel into the float bowl.

I found (at BikeBandit.com listing for the 81 650H) Part Number 48013-001 at $71.81 (item #24). Yikes thats rich! I've got a spare set here I could part with.
