This looks a bit different than what's in the manual. Also, it looks like there's a hex welded to the end. Is this all normal? I also see a part pinned internally. Does that require special cleaning?

Just a standard old cleaner/degreaser or carb cleaner works.

It looks like it had been broken and repaired.

I chucked mine in the trash and new use spin-on filters. One of the best upgrades installed, in my opinion...

the internal is a pressure valve just spray it with carb cleaner and make sure the ball is not frozen.

and did you have the spring and large washer on the bolt when you took the filter off?
spring goes on bolt first then washer then oilfilter

the oil filter bolt has 2 size heads on them could be the differance between oem and aftermarket

just like with the oil drain bolt oem came with screw port on head to test temp.
you will see some with a screw in the head, some with out

The bolt was produced with some larger and some smaller heads......doesn't necessarily mean aftermarket. A lot of times, the smaller head would strip, and people would replace with the larger ones

Just changed mine on my new bike. The original setup is as they say in Brooklyn..."ehhh", When you reinstall; notch down, keep an eye on the rubber gasket as
it may pop out of groove, you can keep an "eye" on it with your finger up to a point, then you just leave it up to fate. I may do the spin filter, but do I need a
adapter bolt to put the filter on, or does this new filter have a male connection?

The spin-on kit is the adapter. Works just like on any car.

Thanks guys, a lot of talk just for a oil filter, LOL. I did get mine on right, concave toward spring, Right?
Looks like the problem i had with the clutch was just a matter of not realizing how much force it took to release clutch plate , so a major cable adjustment took care of it, and maybe tomorrow it goes for the long awaited road test !

I like your silicone grease idea for holding the housing o ring in place. I have always had it flop around.

I try to learn something useful every day. Today I've already completed that task, but I do wonder why I never thought of it myself.

i'm not sure silicone grease would do a clutch any good. probably not enough to hurt anything but regular dino grease might be better
