XJ750 RJ fork assembly

    Hi all,
    I pulled my forks on my '82 X750 RJ. Whilst jarring the forks loose I believe I screwed up the order of what I believe to be the damper seat/oil lock assembly. The pictures in my Haynes manual are not clear which part is which. Do I have this in the correct order for reassembly?

    Also, I foolishly pried at the o-ring before I jarred it out, as per the manual's instructions. In doing so I put some dents in it. Should I worry about the dents/burrs?

    Dress the dings with a file, followed by incresaingly fine grits of finishing paper until smooth. The damage is well below the swept ares of teh fork seal, but you want it smooth just to help prevent future damage.

    Also, put some dang shoes on.

    i've found the best thing to work those nicks out with is one of those ceramic knife sharpener sticks, or the round diamond coated ones. color the nick with a magic marker so you only hit the problem area. Don't take anymore off than you have to.

    Thanks guys. Yea I wasn't working without shoes. Just taking pictures.

    What about the order of the bushings. Is that correct?

    Yes. the upper (larger around) one goes into the top of the lower fork leg, while the lower (smaller around) one guides the bottom of the upper fork leg.
    The link I posted has everything laid out as to where it all goes, but this other link may be easier for you to see how it all goes.

    Just to make sure there is no confusion, the bushings are reversed in the photo as to where they "go".........the shorter, thicker bushing goes into the LOWER (outer) aluminum fork tube, while the thinner, taller bushing is located on the UPPER (chrome) tube. Of course, they end up being "stacked" in that order when your hammer them out originally.

    When re-installing the bushings, I prefer to seat the lower (outer) tube bushing into the fork tube first, and then install the upper tube and bushing thru the lower tube bushing. Yes, you have to manually squeeze the upper tube bushing closed in order to do that, but that thin upper tube bushing is somewhat easily damaged and no longer available......
