Royal Star

    My brother-in-law bought a new Can-Am Spyder, so I bought his old bike. 1996 Royal Star. 31k miles. Always kept in the garage. Super clean. Questionable maintenance. He always had someone else work on the bike so I don't know if the work was actually done. It doesn't run as well as I feel it should. I tried to pass a car on the interstate, cracked the throttle and the darn thing popped and farted through the carbs a couple of times before it took off.
    I want to check the valve clearances and the Clymer manual says I need a special tool to hold the bucket down for removing the shim. I'm having a problem locating one on line and they seem pricey. $75.
    Is there an alternate method like with the XJ's? 12 gauge wire, zip-tie?

    Wire or Zip tie should work.

    So I'm reading through the Clymer Manual on how to check and adjust valve clearances.Which is detailed in chapter 3, which refers you to chapter 4 for removal of the valve covers, which refers to chapter 8 for the removal of the seat, gas tank, air box and carb assembly. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? Thank God the interval is every 26,600 miles.
    The Maxim is SO much easier even if it is every 5000.

    No big. Just a few more valves under each cam. At least the X valve covers are easier to get to for removal.

    You have to remove the cams, the shims are under the bucket...

    Yes. That's still easier than all the things that have to be removed from the Royal Star he's working on. I'm so glad that my son's Shadow has hydraulic adjusters. You can't take the valve covers off without pulling the engine first.
