So I bought an 81 xj650 it was bobbed and chopped it was all ready apart so it's bare frame and engine I was going to start putting the wire harness back on it but it's all chopped up from po I would like to make a minimal harness for it but I have no idea where to start, this is my first cafe racer build so I'm at a loss any help would be appreciated I have looked at wire diagrams but I get easily confused by them. It's not my first rodeo with an xj but I would rather get kicked in the nuts befor dealing with what happened with the last xj again all I would like to have a toggle switch for power and a push button for the starter, I couldn't care less for the blinkers or horn but I will probable put a horn on later

Welcome aboard. So you plan to build a cafe from your bobbed 650 right? You'll have to sort/label the existing harness if you plan to use it for the build. I'm assuming you weren't a member here with your previous xj.

No I wasn't a member with the last one but that was 2 or 3 years ago, and the old harness is shot but I can go through it and find the connectors that match up with the components that I will need to use and cut them off with a foot or so of wire still attached but I don't think I will be able to do much more then that with it

Do the colors in the diagram Match the colors of the wires on the bike

Somewhat; wire colors vary some from one model XJ to another. The intent is that a person would build their own harness, which is a great deal easier than trimming a stock harness down.

I plan on using the stock connectors for ease and I can build from there but I need a little better explanation then just a diagram though, like where would the best place to start off with the harness. The original was already removed from the casing by the po which might have caused more trouble

Start at the stator or the battery, and work your way through the system one circuit at a time. Many people find that it's much easier to build the harness on a pegboard or sheet of plywood. You have to measure each wire as you go, but the circuits become easier to keep track of on a board than on the bike.

Ok I will give that a shot after work tomorrow thanks for the help I will try doing one circuit at a time, instead of looking at the whole system and driving my self up a wall

You might also try drawing it out on paper to help your brain figure how it all goes.

Once I get started on it I should be fine, right now the bike is in the garage and for the past couple days while I have work so I haven't really been able to sit down and look at it, all I have been looking at is wire diagrams for the past day or 2 so I'm sure it will get easier when I actually start on it

stagger your splices for the plugs, makes a thinner, cleaner looking cable

Will an intake off of an 1980 xj650 maxim fit on an 82 xj650 Seca? I bought two carb racks and I'm going to have one for stock and another I'm going to rejet and try some ideas for pods but if those don't work I will put an air box in the bike with the stock carb set up
