Did you remember to fully seat the plug when you re-connected the harness?

    you broke it
take it out and see what's wrong with it, the float might be stuck

Or the float may have fallen off (which would be odd, but theoretically possible).

The sending unit is known for a wire that brakes. Remove the sender and inspect. This has happened before do search for this issue.

I had the same problem on my XJ700. I removed the sending unit and found that the wire connection (inside the tank) had come loose. I soldered it back and everything is fine.

Drain tank( open petcock to pri drain into clean container) the sending unit is held in by 4 screws carefully remove sending unit. Check float on end of arm, check wires at top of unit. I would recomend ordering a new gasket from xj4ever ( replaced mine when I redcoated tank.)

I removed the sending unit and found the ground wire had either become loose or dirty...cleaned it and tightened back up and now she works just fine!!! Thanks for all the input
