Bobber

    Does anyone have any ideas how to mount a solo seat on a 1982 xj650 maxim seeing what's out there ?

    I think you have to chop the frame rails at the back. Not too popular with the purists

    Here's what I did. Had to weld on a couple pieces of angle iron, drill, and on it went. Speaking to what Matti said, I'm not a purist and I can't say whether or not it would interfere with any access that you need under the seat since I got rid of all that stuff pretty much as soon as I bought it.

    I welded a curved piece of metal between the 2 frame rails and drilled some holes for the seat studs to go through. It was a pretty tight fit but turned out real nice. On my first bike I actually salvaged a piece from the back of the frame that was hacked off. You can see it pretty good in my build thread here:

    On my 2nd bike I actually had some raw steel laying around that I bent into shape and it looked a lot cleaner when I was done. I don't have any real good pics of the bracket/mount I made but here's the bike so you can kind of see it and how the seat sits:
