    Hi everyone,

Attached you will see a pic of where I am at at grinding down my oil filter bolt on my 82 Yamaha maxim. It started to loosen up and drop some oil but it won't pop off. I bought a dremel grinder which I've been using . Should I continue attaching the center or the edges? Any other suggestions? Thank you!

You're doing well, those can be stubborn as a cross mule. You might try shooting some penetrating oil at the bolt/cover joint, you're at/almost at the point where you can try GENTLY prying on the back edge of the cover (fins) against the block to pop the cover off........note: LOTS of oil may follow.

Thanks a lot. In terms of the remaining grinding would you suggest I focus on the middle or the edges by the aluminum?

Probably both. As soon as you drill thru the center some more, you'll find empty space (the bolt is hollow under the head) and removing that material may help relieve the "outward" stress on the bolt shaft. Besides prying, you can also GENTLY try rotating the cover a bit. Right now it is just being held in place via some friction.

I got the bolt off and the oil changed with the new 17 mm bolt, with anti seize lubricant, and I made sure to only tighten the filter at 11 foot pounds. Didn't feel like I tightened it that much but there are no leaks and it is holding solid!

You did it right. The bolt just has to squeeze the o-ring and washer, not clamp against a lot of pressure.
