'82 650 maxim. I don't know exactly what the prime is used for on the gas control valve. Obvious for run and needed reserve a time or two, but not sure what the prime is for or when to use it.

Also, any rough ideas how long I can run on reserve would help from past experience.

    Thanks.

The prime is for priming the fuel bowls to make shure they have gas in them.
Yoy shoud be able to drive a nother 20 miles or so but when I hit reserve i start looking for fuel. I hate pushing!!

So, if you were going to take the gas tank off the bike, which of these three choices should the gas valve be left on?

Assuming the petcock vacuum valve is working, run or reserve should not allow the petrol to escape with the engine off.

Leave it on run then you take the hose off from vacum and fuel. Gas shouldnt flow out only when the bike is running.
And when you flip the petcock to reserve remember to put it back to run I forgot to do this once and ran out of gas. Like I said I HATE PUSHING!!

    Thanks for the replies!

I left the question on cold starting, any temp. Do you think using the prime would help or do I need to worry about flooding if I do that? Also how long should I leave it on prime before setting on runif I do this?

I use the prime only if the bikes been sitting for a week or so, It shouldn't flood out unless your float neadle and seats are bad. and then it's just run out the over flow tubes. I usually leave the prime on for thirty secons then start bike and turn to on.

I usually count to 6 when I am using the prime on a cold morning or if the bike has sat all weekend. That seems to work usually and not over do it.
