So I'm a little taller and the mirrors on my bike (not original) just aren't doing it for me. It's really hard to see behind myself with them. The stem comes straight up (mostly, maybe a slight angle) and then shoots off at a 45 degree angle. So my questions:

    1. Is there a different stem that just shoots right off the mount without going up at all? Anyone have any recommendations or:
    2. Should I switch to handlebar mirrors, and if so, can anyone recommend any?

    Thanks!
    -Mike

There are mirror adapter/risers out in the marketplace. I put a set of adapters on a guys maxim 650 for just the reason you describe and he likes the result. It pushed the mirrors up about 1/2" and out almost an inch.

Whatever you get, remember that the right hand factory mirror mount has a left-hand thread.

Kmoe, are the XJ bike mirrors 10mm or 8mm thread?

Got risers / widers on my standard mirrors and it gives a much better view behind now, they look a bit odd but i've got used to them.

My handle bars have steal weights at the end. I drilled and tapped theads and bolted on the mirrors on. If you have hollow ends just insert the mirror and tighten. This will expand the mount and hold the mirror in place.

    I've got a small problem (I hope)

The throttle grip has some type of ridged plastic and my grips don't fit around it (pic below). What are my options? I've got the grip and end bar mirror installed on the left side, it was super easy.

    Thanks!

One will be slightly larger inside. I suppose you could have the wrong size grip, but if it's correct, it'll be a tight fit. Put a small amount of rubbing alcohol inside and then just slide it on. It will be easy to reposition for a while, but by the next day, it'll be solid on the handlebar. (This advice was for rubber grips like the ones I installed.)

Cut the ridges off. They are part of how the factory grip locks in to the throttle tube, and aren't needed with aftermarket grips (and in fact prevent them from fitting correctly).

I used a dremel tool with a sanding drum. Made quick work of the ribs.

All the stock yamaha XJ throttle tubes have the ribs on it. They are still available new from Yamaha (grip and tube come as an assembly), so cutting yours won't hurt anything.
