as bad as it sounds, i am looking at a very stripped down project that needs a lot of work. with wiring harness is gone completely along with the entire speedo cluster, handle bars, levers, controls, cables, ect.

i can source a new carb and exhaust, and install no problem but the wiring is what makes me nervous.

is there a setup that i can buy that will give me a no frills bare bones working bike? like a painless wiring system?

push button starter and ignition timing? thats really all i hope i need. brake and turn lights are a perk but not a necessity.

    thanks in advance.

There's a thread on here about a minimal wiring harness that might help you out.

you should probably use the TCI since it was designed to work with this engine (and does a good job). You likely should retain the circuitry associated with charging like the regulator and diode block. But, I don't want to re-hash.. Let me find that other thread.

Well, like "toomanybikes" mentioned, he has stuff.. people have stuff.. you can get all the stuff you need. Question is how much.. and shopping around, you'll figure out what that is.

    Same bike, yes? http://www.xjbikes.com/forums/threads/xj750-project-bike-parts-bike-near-chicago-milwaukee.97664/

You need a bike in better condition, and use yours as a parts donor.

Just a TCI and wiring harness will set you back about 1/4 the cost of recomissioning a bike that's all in one piece (even if you build a minimal harness).

If the machine has sentemental value than it's worth doing, otherwise consider it a parts bike. There are just too many relatively-expensive things that are missing.

If your goal is to build it to sell then you're going to end up way under the water on it.

yeah, thats me. im weighing the options of just getting the bike in running condition and just getting it gone.

the numbers are definitely against me. no real sentimental value, im just trying to see it through.

    Dan,
"Nothing is more difficult, and therefore more precious, than to be able to decide."

You have a decision to make, I am not sure of all the circumstances surrounding this decision but given the purging of parts from your garage I am going to ass-u-me that there may be some heartache involved also.

My .02 cents; sell it on Craigslist as 'part of a parts bike' take whatever they will give you and move forward. Keep an eye out for another complete XJ that 'ran good last year', buy it, don't bob it - restore it (with help from here) and feel good.
