1982 Yamaha Maxim Handlebar Swap ????

    Hey riders,

    I'm looking for some help on my 82' Maxim 1100 build. It's a work in progress but so far I've done the following:
    1) a rear frame chop and building a new hugger fender setup (inprogress)
    2) aftermarket single gage speedo/ tach combo
    3) near full strip so the bike can go to paint for the engine and frame and all fairing for paint
    4) Currently I'm working out that I need a different triple tree upper so I can get some nice new set of one piece bars with risers. The 82' bars were separate and clearly the triple tree doesn't appear to allow this conversion.

    Has anyone on here done this swap (which I've seen in multiple places) as I need to figure out which triple tree to swap on here to make my life easy.

    Before you went to all that trouble did you happen to make sure that the engine would run properly?

    The risers for your bars unbolt from the triple tree. You should then be able to bolt on risers to fit standard bars.

    Fair Question, I bought the bike just after it had been fully inspected and some minor issues tended too. No the tear down wasn't completely necessary. However, I really wanted a custom look without the sky high price tag.
    Bike was in great shape minus some minor rust on the exhaust which I knew about and expected for its age.

    Good. Then it should go back together and still run.
    So many new posters get into the cosmetics before doing the important work.

    My younger self was exactly that. However this being my 4th bike and an engineer by profession I am most concerned with the little details first. I attached a couple images of when I got the bike and how it sits now for reference.

    I noticed you had stock airbox in first photo, but not in others....put stock airbox back in, pods look cooool , but can be a bear to tune just right. You will need to rejet etc stock easier to tune, runs better, better mpg .

    I went back and fourth about the "air section", I read a ton about guys saying yes or no to the airbox removal and different pods. I got the 4 K&N pods and my local shop guy I've got some pointers and parts from said it should be a non-issue on the tuning end.
    I know it will change the tuning dynamics of the bike but as I'm building the bike to just cruise (and not stupid fast) so it's about how it looks and sounds, so I made the call to pull the box.

    Ok ..just remember these carbs do not like a large velocity of air . Was only trying to save you a head ache , my Seca 750 screams with stock set up . Good luck.

    Thank you ! If it really becomes that much of a headache I have set aside the airbox and related items so that it could go back on. Here's hoping it doesn't though.
    Another question for the masses, exhaust.

    Has anyone done anything wild like getting a sport yoshimura exhaust and putting it on here, or even a dual to keep to 2:1 exhausts ? I'm still completely up in the air when it comes to the exhaust, again I don't want crazy headaches but the stock exhaust just needs an update. Thougthts? or any interesting exhausts anyone has put on these bikes.

    Almost. Intake velocity drops at part-throttle when pods are fitted.

    Yes David.. Just wondering if you tackled your handle bar issue yet as well?? I just picked up my first xj1100 as well and have cleaned the carbs all out working on the tank and other stuff first to get it running good then focus on the bars as I'm not a fan of the stock I-beam multipiece ones either and would like to go single bar... If I get to it soon here I'll post my findings too thanks!!

    Hey Gents,

    Sadly I've been spending my time wood working and building some things the wife wanted done first. My thoughts on bars so far, I am gravitating to motostyle bars seen below. The higher cross beam I'm thinking would be nice to mount my new single all in one gage too, picture below of that too. I'll just have to fab a bracket for it.

    I wanted to go for a simplistic cafe kind of style and its morphed into a cafe meets sport, I picked up a yoshimura twin exhaust from a gsx-r 1000 for cheap thats going on the bike as well. The bike is going to be all gloss black with a special blue centre line stripe down all fenders front to back.

    Currently I'm working on getting custom rear fender brackets made up so the fender will be a hugger. I will try to start a build thread so you guys can follow if you want.
