Is it normal to have numbers "engraved" on the carbs floats? (see picture) I was under the impression that they were not supposed to be punctured in any way.

    Nope, not normal.

These floats are like blocks of foam.... Not a hollow chamber like other law mowers or snowblowers---

Looks like someone tried to do some markings on float? We may never know.

That's exactly what they did. Left side floats on 1-4 are marked, respectively, 41-44. Either scratched with a needle or cut with a razor many moons ago. I'm not one to judge, but of all the bits that I just took apart (first full rebuild), the floats were not one of the top items I was worried about mismatching.

They should still float. No need to replace unless they sink or are damaged enough to hang up on something.

Ok. I was concerned because they seem to absorb fluid through the cuts. I wasn't sure if it would throw off the level.

On another note. Anyone have a trick to counterhold the throttle shafts on 2 and 3, so the nut can be removed? These things are TIGHT. Every other bit on all four carbs came apart with no issues. These are all that's left to do.

Adjustable wrench on the flat. They're supposed to be tight. You don't want them coming apart while you're riding, do you?

Hold them down in a cup of fuel. Got bubbles?

Couldn't hold them in fuel, as I'm rebuilding on the dining room table, but held them under hot water (as the Haynes manual suggests), and yes, bubbles form at the surface of the score marks. So I assume, over time they would take on fuel.

Also, I was getting my parts list together for Chacal, and would like to replace my carb hat hardware. My rack only has brackets in two positions (inner screws of carbs 3 & 4). Therefore I have 12 short screws & 4 long screws. Usually Len is right on, and states the 32 series carbs should have 10 & 6. Any input?

+1 for Len. 6 long = 1 for the fuel line clip, 1 for the vac hose clip, 2 for the throttle bracket and 2 for the ec bracket.

Thanks Gary. I talked it over with Len too. My rack is missing both the fuel line & vac line clips, and they replaced those screws with shorties.
