I've been trying to source a new battery but had no luck, found some in the US but the company won't post abroad and postage would cost an arm and a leg anyway. So, will any battery that is 12 volt 14AH that fits the box do? Also want to get new plug leads and caps but not sure what will be available here in Spain. There's a dealer a little way from me if I can find him, our local town is like a maze. Nice suggestions on a postcard please.

I dont know if they changed it between '82 and '85, but my bike takes an "L" suffix battery (ES12-14L) which means the negative terminal is on the left (which is 'backwards' of standard battery orientation). A 12v14Ah battery is generally going to be the same size no matter what you get.

If you want. PM me your address and I'll see what it'll cost to ship one over. The Walmart by me has them for $45 (including the core charge- if i can find a junk battery to return it'll save you $8) I have an international flat rate box that someone sent something to me in, but I don't know what the price to Spain is. Cant be that much. Can you get sulfuric acid locally? Again I don't know the rules, acid may be surface mail only which would take 4-6 weeks to get to you.

I just checked the USPS website, and 2 things.. It'll cost $37 to ship the battery, and acid of any kind is not allowed to be mailed internationally. So the best I can do is mail the dry battery and you get the acid there. If you're really in a bind I'll do that for you no problem. But it may be cheaper to see if you can find it there.

Thanks for the very kind offerTaZMaNiaK but I had a look at the site Anderson suggested and found a shop with the right battery in Velez Malaga, our local town. Still not sure about the ht leads, the coil seems to be a sealed unit and I'm a little concerned about pulling them around, do the wires just twist out?

    Thanks to you both.

    Thanks Nick.
Just remembered I have have a pair for a 700 I bought on ebay a while ago they look to be in better nick than those fitted. I'll see how she runs now and then maybe swop over.

Amazing what you find when you go through you little treasure chest in the garage.

I'm recovering 3 sets of dead coils right now Mick. Having access to a mill is nice but not neccessary. I checked out the link that Nick provided, it is spot on. However, I chose not to remove as much material as the guide suggests. I'll post some pictures of what I did here shortly. In addition, I found 7mm copper core wire rather easily and inexpensively at my PartsUnlimited dealer. Around $3 USD a foot for the stuff. Plug caps ran about $3 each as well.

Here's a tip: If you're looking for solid core ignition wire and your local auto parts store doesn't carry it, try asking for it at a tractor or farm implement shop. Most older tractors require this type of wire for their distributor/magneto cap connections. We carry it at the auto parts store where I work for this very reason--lots of old tractors still around.
