Hello! New member here! I just picked up what I think is an 1981 XJ550 for $100. I had the intentions of getting it running and selling as I already have another bike ('78 CX500 standard). I didn't look very close at it until I got it home, and oh boy is this thing in really bad shape. Chain is missing, starter was hanging off and siezed, hole in the clutch cover, one of the exhaust pipes is welded shut, wiring is a mess, carbs missing, no title or keys...I might just part it out. Any thoughts? I noticed the clutch cover says 2200cm3 on it...Incorrect or...?

There are just enough hints that make me suspect a seized engine.
    Ill 2nd the parts bike.

It would sure run lean with those invisible, open air carbeurators. :(:)

    2200cm3 sounds like oil capacity.
But you have a factory airbox! To the right person that could get you some good coin! :D

Like the experts said - parts bike.

I should enumerate on why I think this is a parts bike. The photo showing that the starter is not installed, and the missing chain.
In that photo I also see the shift cover, which is broken. It likely broke when the chain failed. When a chain fails like that it usually takes part of the crankcase with it.
Now since it only cost $100 it's not beyond sane to fix it, but you'd need to find another parts bike to do so economically (one with an undamaged engine).

In the pic of the right side with the regulator hanging down you will notice the not so nicely polished rear tire!!

Cripes. Some dummy put a 150 on. WTF!
    That took some serious effort.

Can't tell for sure about the 150. But it definitely was cooked!

hole in clutch cover could be from brake pedal.

start a conversation with me. i can also test your relays and tci if you want.

+1 to pedal causing the hole..... From my perspective, I see the impact signs and rupture signs coming from outside going in. I don't see anything that indicates blowing OUT.

Definitely fixable, but with title issues, it's a really good parts bike as far as I would view it.
